Maria Recio, American-Statesman Correspondent WASHINGTON — The border is now, more than ever, a political hot spot that has sharply divided Democrats and Republicans — except some of the lawmakers who know it best. “Do we have a humanitarian crisis? Yes, we do,” U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar, D-Laredo, said Thursday after touring the border in his district with U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va. Cuellar, who represents about 200 miles of the U.S.-Mexico border, is one of the few Democrats calling the influx of unaccompanied children crossing the Rio Grande “a crisis.” He is emerging as a pivotal player to help resolve the historic surge of migrants from Central America. More than 170,000 were apprehended at the border in March, a 15-year high, according to preliminary government figures cited in several media reports.
