New coronavirus variant found in Bay Area linked to massive Kaiser outbreak

Another coronavirus variant is spreading across California, including in the Bay Area, where it has been linked to multiple large outbreaks, public health officials warned Sunday.
San Francisco and Santa Clara counties are among those where the variant was found. Scientists first identified L452R in Denmark early in the pandemic, and it was subsequently found in California and other states last year, said Dr. Charles Chiu, a virologist and professor of laboratory medicine at UCSF.
