Opinion: We use many strategies to help the San Diego Botanic Garden survive drought. Here are some tips.

, Ph.D., is president & CEO at San Diego Botanic Garden, and lives in Encinitas.
San Diego Botanic Garden is a 37-acre paradise in Encinitas with over 5,000 kinds of plants. Our plant collections include endangered species we work to save from extinction as well as beautiful gardens that nourish the soul. Drought and water are always on our minds.
While there are many steps to drought-proofing your garden, the single most important is choosing the right plants. “Right plant, right place” is our mantra. With the exception of a few critical plant collections we maintain for conservation and education, all of the San Diego Botanic Garden plants are well-adapted for life in coastal San Diego. They expect only little rain in the winter followed by a dry summer. We also prioritize plants that can tolerate high salt levels. We minimize turfgrass. If we keep trying to grow a plant, but it does not survive, we conclude it must not be right for our garden. Part of successful gardening is realizing what we simply should not grow. Plants that need to be coddled are usually the least sustainable to grow.
