Phil Matier: BART’s new cars spending more time in shop than old ones — problems with software and flat wheels [San Francisco Chronicle] Jan. 6—BART says the new, $2 million cars that make up its “Fleet of the Future” are clean, sleek and a pleasure to ride, but they’re also causing nearly three times as many service delays as the 40-year-old cars they are replacing. The 290 new Bombardier cars that have arrived so far cost between $1.7 million and $2 million each and are also suffering flat wheels at a far higher rate than the system’s legacy cars. As a result BART has halted delivery of additional cars for at least three to six months until the problems are fixed.
