Remove all content that refers to B.1.617 as 'Indian variant': Centre in advisory to social media firms

The Government of India has issued an advisory to all social media platforms, asking them to purge all content referring to or implying the 'Indian variant of Covid-19'. This development comes days after a controversy erupted over Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal's reference to the 'Singapore variant' of the infection.
In a letter to social media platforms, the IT Ministry has cited the terminology fixed by the WHO to name variants of Covid-19. A senior official in the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeiTY) said, "It is an advisory not an order."
