The beautiful but unsung region of France that gave the world vaccinations

Scarcely a sentence is uttered right now without it featuring the word “vaccine”. It is the obsession of our days, the hope we cling to as once we clung to faith. It is time, then, to pay respect to Louis Pasteur, who did more than anyone to establish vaccination in modern medicine. The greatest scientist of the 19th-century – “ever”, if you believe the French – did a lot more than that: pioneering microbiology, the washing of hands by surgical staff and, obviously, pasteurisation.
