A brutal, undeniable fact of modern life is that the free press — that incredibly shrinking share of the world’s media ecosystem — is under siege.
Authoritarian governments and wannabe dictators who know they can hold power or legitimacy only by lying have launched a frontal assault on truth. One of their favorite propaganda tactics is claiming that real news — especially news that reveals their wrongdoing — is “fake news.” They also employ the time-honored way of escaping accountability — shut down the independent press and shut up anyone who disagrees with them. Lock ‘em up, beat ‘em up, threaten their families, shoot ‘em — whatever it takes.
