Live from the kgo tv broadcast center, this is abc 7 news. U. S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia tonight is being remembered as the conservative rock of the nations highest court. A live look at the white house. The president has ordered flags at the white house and across the country be flown at halfstaff. Good evening. Im eric thomas. Well get back to the passing of Justice Scalia in a moment. First, breaking news. Firefighters are just getting a threealarm fire under control in San Francisco. Lets go to abc 7s tiffany wilson. Thats right. Right across the street from where that fire began. You can see firefighters going into the building right there behind me. That threealarm fire is now out. The firefighters expect to be here overnight, though, watching and looking for any hot spots. And just making sure that nobody goes into these buildings. Early reports had as many as 50 people being displaced. I just spoke with the assistant fire chief who says its closer to 20 to 25 people displaced. There are members of the red cross standing next to me. So they are here on scene trying to assist those displaced individuals as best as they can. The assistant fire chief tells me no one was injured but one dog is still missing. The threealarm fire began around 8 00 this evening. And the initial firefighters who arrived on scene found flames shooting out of the garage and the first floor. That fire quickly escalated to a second and then third alarm. The scientistant chief says the age of the home contributed to putting out this fire. We have two 50foot ladders here. We cant use our aerials. We put the ladders up fully extended to get to the roof. That was a challenge. Reporter take a look at this video shot by amateur photographer michael cunningham. He says he could feel the intense heat from where he was shooting the video. It gives you a perspective on how hot the fire was and how strong those flames were during the most intense moments this evening. Fortunately, you can see the fire that initially started in this first house and spread to a second is now out. There are firefighters here on scene. They expect to be here all night long. Traffic in this area will be a mess. They have some of the roads around here shut off. You can expect that if you are here tonight. 20 to 25 people displaced, but no one seriously injured. Back to our other top story. The sudden death of supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. Scalia died in his sleep at a private residence in south texas. He was considered the Supreme Courts most fiery conservative voice. His death leaves the court in limbo. There are four liberal leaning justices. The three conservative leaning judges are chief justice john roberts, samuel alito and Clarence Thomas. Anthony kennedy has long been considered the more moderate swing vote. Scalias death will likely set off a struggle between the president and congress. Lana zach has the story from washington. Reporter just scalia was known for his razor sharp mind, costic wit and his passing leaves a tremendous hole. Justice scalia was known as the conservative anchor of the Supreme Court. His sudden death was marked by republicans and democrats alike. He influenced a generation of judges, lawyers and students. And profoundly shaped the legal landscape. Hell go down as one of the great justices in the history of this republic. Reporter theres already a political battle brewing. Mitch mcconnell threatening republicans will not confirm any obama nominee. The president saying hell fulfill his constitutional responsibility. There will be plenty of time for me to do so and for the senate to fulfill its responsibility to give that person a fair hearing. Reporter Antonin Scalia was the longest serving justice on the current United States Supreme Court. Nominated by president Ronald Reagan in 1986. Getting nominated to the Supreme Court is the culmination of a dream, of course. And im greatly honored that the president would have such confidence in me. Reporter he was confirmed unanimously by the senate and became the first Italian American member of the court. Justice scalia died in his sleep of Natural Causes at a resort in west texas. He leaves behind a wife and nine children. He was 79 years old. Though Justice Scalia was firm in his conservative beliefs, he had no problem reaching across the aisle, counting among his very closest friends liberal Justice Ruth Bader ginsburg. Justice scalias death has already sent shockwaves through the president ial race. Bay area experts say u. S. Senate races could also be affected. Sergio quintana is in the newsroom with that. Reporter if the republican run senate didnt act on the president s nominees, it could focus attention on senators up for election. Republicans are defending more seats than democrats.
