frankly, my dear, i don t give a damn. most buyers in this market wouldn t give a damn either even if at $4.9 million it was a steal, down from its original price of more than $6 million. unbelievable. but on this day, ken had nabbed a potential buyer. this is a real bargain. i m totally enthralled with it and i m not happy with everything. i m very particular. reporter: gwenn williams, wealthy in her own right and heir to her husband s tire fortune. this is my favorite, my absolute favorite. reporter: how did ken reel her in? he figured he would lure her extravagance by offering more extravagance. not only did ken use a stretch limo to shuttle gwenn to three different foreclosures in one day, get this he hired a private company, jet suites, to fly her all the way out here from her beach front home in california, with us in tow. i feel obligated to serve you a cocktail or something. i assume you ve never looked at houses from a jet before, though. no. just not what people do. reporter: a high-flying home tour comes as sales of luxury foreclosu foreclosures in vegas are on the rise. and ken says all he is doing is tapping into a transportation problem. i m ken. how are you? if they can get on a jet in the morning, come out here, see three or four foreclosed homes with great values and be back home at 3:00, 4:00, it s almost like running an errand. they re home for dinner. reporter: it s all very vegas. footing the $6,000 air fare is a business gamble. i ll pay for someone to fly out here and back but if they purchase a home from me, i ll make it up many times over. i want to steal it and take it home to the beach. i think it s too big. it wouldn t go in the limo. reporter: it s taking over the top and topping it, in a climate rich for investors like gwenn. i can see parties galore here. will you invite me? i ll invite you. thank you. reporter: rarefied air, indeed, both on the ground and off. for today, lee cowan, nbc news, somewhere over a fancy home for sale. all right. so, jets and luxury aside, if you re in the market for a foreclosed property, there are important things to consider before buying. nicole lavin anchors world exchange on cnbc. good morning. lots of foreclosed homes on the market right now. absolutely. is it true you necessarily will always save money? sometimes you get what you pay for. we just saw in vegas, these houses are on sale, off from their 2005 highs, though. you have to keep that in mind. the discount you re getting and the amount it s going to take you to fix up the home. we with have seen this all the time, ransacked houses, disgruntled homeowners are leaving, taking lighting fixtures, ceiling fans, toilet paper holders. they re taking the island in the kitchen in some cases because really they don t have a lot of financial incentive to keep it up. where are you beginning to look for a foreclosed home? vegas is a huge market for it. how do you find homes in your neighborhood? sometimes realtytrac.com, state by state sites, nyforeclosures is another good one. once you start looking to the idea of foreclosed homes, you say that a couple of things to consider first. first is neighborhood. absolutely. do a little bit of your own homework. buying at auction, you ll not get a chance to get a walk-through. go to the neighborhood, do a little reconn. it will tell you about how the home has been maintained on the inside. consider how long the home has been vacant. a real tell-tale sign of what you might be in for when it comes to the fix-ups. big question you need to know, are the utilities still working? common sense. if it s sitting there for a long time there s probably a reason for that. sometimes the swimming pools are in disrepair or shambles. all sorts of stuff. finally, you say put together a team as well. broker, lawyer, contractor. how will they be able to help you? you also want to know if there s been structural damage. swimming pool is one thing, fix up an island in the kitchen. structural damage and financial surprises. you need to know if there are any property liens. with all the volatility going on in the market, is it a good time to invest in a foreclosed home? i almost feel like debbie downer this morning. there are really great deals out there, natalie. mortgages are also at an all-time low, near it. so, sometimes you have to remember if it looks a little too good to be true, sometimes probably is. still worth a look, though. absolutely. just keep an open mind and make sure you know what you re getting into? you can see anything from sunburns to, as you said, spoiled food, causing some problem there is, jellyfish stings. everyone should have a great time. keep a few things in mind to stay safe. i went to the beach yesterday and had to stock up on new s sunscreens. should you get the 100 spf, 70? what should you be looking for specifically when picking out that specific suntan lotion? make sure it s blocking uva and uvb ray. they all don t? they don t all. check the label. spf thing is a little confusing. basically if it s 30 or above, you re fine. 100 versus 30 is probably not a big difference. make sure it s at least 30. apply it every couple of hours? yeah. this is the problem. by now most of us know we need to use it but we re not using it the right way. you need at least two tablespoons to cover your body, reply every two hours or sooner if you re sweating a lot or going in the water. what if you already get the sunburn, what can you do to try to alleviate some of the effects? sunburn can be very painful. to reduce swelling and inflammation, take aspirin or ibuprofen, applying a cool compress, taking a cold shower and putting a moisturizing cream, something with aloe vera or hydrocortisone cream. it can that stop the peeling? no. that s your body s natural ability to get rid of the burnt cells. what are some basic tips parents should be aware of on this memorial day? swimming injuries are important to be awa of and really can be fatal. make sure your kids are with someone else, a supervised adult who is watching them. never mix alcohol and water. not for kids but for adults. certain things you need to do. holiday weekend, a lot of water traffic with boats. avoid canals or inlets where there are boats coming by. they may not see your kids in the water. if you are caught in a rip tide recently saw a tragedy with a kid being dragged away. swim parallel to the shore. always have a buddy system so someone knows that something has happened to you. also in the ocean we experienced this yesterday. there are jellyfish, rock, debris. yes. what do you tell your kids? how do you avoid jellyfish stings? if you see a lot of jellyfish sit out. you should. if you do get stung, couple of thi things you can do. using sea water to wash off extra stingers, avoid fresh water. that can make the situation worse. vinegar. keep that in your beach bag. that can help to deactivate some of the stings. let s talk about another common sting. that s bee stings. how do you treat those? i decided at 48 that it was time to help our country. we are in the war. they needed doctors. so, the simple answer is, i went over to help kids. longer answer, though, has to do with the fact of a little bit of self discovery there. i grew up in a family where my dad had been in world war ii, was a lieutenant and sent a lot of young men off to their deaths and he wound up turning to alcohol as his psychologist when he came back from the war. i went through my life growing up, trying to figure out what would make a man live that way? what kind of experiences did he go through? that was one reason for me to join the military. also, being from littleton, colorado, close ties to the columbine high school community. nine of the 13 who died at columbine were patients of mine at some point. wow! in practice. and then i also had a situation with my daughter, katie, who was sexually assaulted. so, when you throw all of those things into a mix, you say to yourself, okay, do i become bitter and go into a shell or do i get better by going out and serving others? and i chose the service route. and how do you think your you ve been on two tours through iraq now. right. paradise general, furthest thing from paradise. you describe it as a m.a.s.h. unit. you never know what that day will bring, right? if you ve ever seen m.a.s.h., it is a picture postcard. it is tense. it is hot. it is sand all over the place. you know, like with rador o reilly, who could sense those helicopters coming in, you didn t hear them. you felt them coming in. and you never knew what was going to come through the door and you had to take care of anything that came through the door. there s a situation you mention in the book where you cared for the american soldiers and also the insurgent who tried to blow them up. i imagine at times like that, that puts your hippocratic oath to test. hippocratic oath won all the time. we re doctors, servists, and if the insurgent was wounded, worse than the american soldiers, the insurgents went first. that doesn t mean we didn t take care of the american soldiers but you did what you needed to do. we reconciled with that and did what we were supposed to do. it s funny. we have a little different concept of life as americans. american soldiers, if we would run out of blood in the operating room, we would make a call out and soldiers would line up to donate. and they never knew if they were donating blood to an american or to an insurgent. and it was just amazing to think about what the american soldiers and the american thought process is. now in your reservism, you could be called up next year. are you willing to get back out there and serve again? it is always tough to think about going back to war. war is just so hard and so unnatural and so devastating, but you do what you need to do. if there is a call where the young need your help, you answer that call because that s what you are supposed to do. life is not a spectator sport. we are here to serve. your patience, your family. of course, your military men and women who have the privilege of being with you and serving with you, they are very proud of you. thank you so much for being here. thank you. paradise general: riding the surge at combat hospital in iraq, by the way, is the name of the book. dr. dave hnida, thanks for being here. a real pleasure. thank you. we re back with more of today on nbc. this morning in today s kitchen, easy recipes for your memorial day barbecue. hot chef sunny anderson is going to show us how to grill some pork chops with the sweet and sour glaze. we are all hungry. sunny, good morning. thanks for being with us. thanks so much for having me. i wanted to start by saying as a former military member from a huge military family, thanks to all the military families who make that huge sacrifice. it s not lost on us. i love being free. thank you so much. thank you for your service as well. we re going to start thank you. with a really quick marinade that s easy for chicken, or hangar steak as well. i m working with smoked chops today. in my bag, some brown sugar this is sweet and sour. sweet from the brown sugar and the honey. and then into the marinade yeah, this is perfect for like chicken breast, then a little bit of oil and then some chews of the lime goes in. you can leave those in the bag as well. this is a nice 20-minute marinade. the heat comes from our red pepper flake. all right? we know about red pepper flakes. yes, we do. do you know about red pepper flakes, lester? yes, we do. i need to hear that story. right into the bag, these are smoked and cured pork chops. they re already cooked. did you buy them that way or do that yourself? you can buy them this way. one foodie wants it, next thing you know it s at the butcher for a regular basis. 20 minutes in there? 20 minutes. work it around like you just did? kneed it, work it around. get it right on to your grill over the indirect heat. sugars here with the honey and brown sugar. it s going to make some nice caramelization, beautiful marks over there. that one is pretty done. that one is looking pretty good. how do you know when they re done? they re already cooked. you re trying to get them to temperature, about 120 degrees, four minutes on each side. you re ready to eat. nice glaze. if you re having friends come over, you know you won t kill them with the wrong temperature. know what i mean? then you ve got a huge salad. kind of like seinfeld and elaine. this is what i call my house salad, guys. a big salad. a big salad. that s what i want. you come over to my house, it s row main romaine lettuce, fresh bacon that i crisp up. oh, no, no. healthy? are you kidding me? i ll think about that later. take a walk around the block. that s what i say. there you go. that s in there. a little bit of egg. i like to make it like a little bar you go to when you come over to my place. salad is always good. keep the grilling for outdoor. gorgonzola over the top. makes everything better. exactly. and then for dessert, this recipe is on your website. invite anyone that likes sweet and salty combination to give it a try. it s my family s strawberry chocolate jiggle pie. what s the filling? bottom layer are pretzels with butter and sugar. the middle layer is cream cheese, sugar, heavy cream whipped together with cocoa powder and then the top layer is strawberry jell-o with strawberries inside. the top, a little bit of whipped cream and chocolate shavings over the top. you like?
