they re having fun, not together. these southern mudslides in southern california have forced families to flee their home, a certainly situation out there after seven straight days of rain. also coming up, a lot of great retirees are moving in with their kids these days. obviously, that can save a lot of money with shared costs and childcare responsibilities. sometimes with some families, it can be a little too emotionally close for comfort. check out the pros and cons. if you re thinking of adding a health care membership to your wish list this year for your gym, we have five hidden health dangers from the pool to your eyes. what to watch out for and prevent the worst from happening. first, we travel to the north pole and check in on the preparation for the big day. top secret stuff. and last minutetocking stuffs that will cost you $10 or less, but provide hours of fun for the family. 10 bucks or less, priceless experience. not bad. let s check out the top stories of the day. ann is out. carl quintilla. good morning, everybody. a second explosion in rome today, a parcel injuring at least one person exploding at the swiss embassy, seriously wounding a mailroom maker. and record makers out west, miguel is where some of the worst of it hit in california. good morning to you. reporter: good morning. 24 hours ago, christmas trees were up in this neighborhood, folks getting ready for the holiday. now, the community looks like this. many are wondering how everyone survived. reporter: a blanket of mud, community covered in debris. in highland, california, a flash river streamed into town, first a stream of water, then a sea of mud. more than 30 homes damaged and 100 rescued. karen hernandez barely escaped with her life. she used a ladder to get out of her house. it s devastating, we don t have anything left. that s all we have. now, we don t have flood insurance. we have nothing, nothing. reporter: after a week of bad weather, roads became rivers, rising water turned to solid mud. in laguna beach, 30 rescues. in four feet of water and roads impassable. equal come stadium in san diego is an island. 47 people at a nearby hotel were rescued when a creek burst its banks. back in highland, the water is gone, damage is done. many here won t be coming home for christmas. the damage in this neighborhood alone is going to be in the millions. the storm has moved on but it is going to take weeks if not months to clean up this mess. back to you. a roof collapsed on a building killing two and injuring 17 others. four remain in critical condition today. first, the police force in afghanistan is taking aim, and they re training the female cadets because male officers cannot train women, and wearing full length burqas by terrorists to avoid security. and following violence targeted at a community, in october, a bloody siege killed 68 worshipers at a baghdad church. threats continued against that country s dwindling christian minority. a pair tree found snapped and charred in the debris at the world trade center has taken root once again at the ceremonial replanting. only eight feet when damaged in the attacks, it was nursed to health and now stands 30 feet tall. some much needed spa treatment for a few of the world s largest rodents. they were treated to a traditional japanese bath complete with floating lemon wedges, to help them stay warm as the temperatures drop. it is five minutes past the hour. back to matt and amy. call gone, don t take me away. leave me alone. that s why i don t go to public pools. you don t know who s in there before you. stephanie abrams is filling in while al takes time off. good morning. what s interesting, a lot of people dreaming off a white christmas. these girls are from atlanta. you want a white christmas in new york. we re from atlanta and missing it. you have a better chance of seeing a white christmas in atlanta than we do in new york city. figure that out. here s a look at our forecast today. sunshine for portions of the south. that low in the rockies will bring that snow to the deep south. and up and down the mississippi river valley, check this out, we are going to see a mixture of sunshine and clouds. + three northwest winds expected at 15 to 20 mi tamron, all lexy wants for christmas are her two front teeth. 6-year-old from virginia. how adorable. all right, stephanie, thank you. this morning on today s family, moving in with your children after retirement. with the economy still in the mud, researchers have found many retired parents now movie ing i with their adult kids. is it the right move for you? sharon epperson, cnbc s financial correspondent and sharon. you hit a nerve because you actually did a piece on this, the trend of so many adults moving in with their kids and some cases based on the economy. largely based on the economy. we have seen a trend from 1980 to 2008, a 33% increase in mult multigenerational households. that is the most recent data we have. probably grown since then because of the economy. a lot of people concerned about their 401(k)s, concerned they re not getting the same pension they may have gotten and social security and thinking public safety might not be there, let me go to the age-old private safety net, the family. and the upside for parents and adult children, i hate to say it, now you have a live-in baby-sitter and that saves a significant amount of money. for a lot of people, childcare is the most expensive cost in their household next to rent and mortgage and this helps a great deal and so can dividing the household chores and maybe if they split some of the rent or mortgage, it helps out financially. that s a win-win for anyone. you have to look at the pros and cons of it if you want it to work. the money upside will help but the emotional roller coaster can be damaging if you don t handle this properly. it can be but as sharon said, it can be a win-win. one of the things we have to pay attention to, what people need when they retire and what the receiving family needs when they re bringing someone into their home. people when they retire need companionship, need to feel youthful, they need to feel needed, a purpose and a sense of security and supportive environment, among other things. if you have this in your family, you can contribute. your talked about baby-sitting. right. in many cases, who better than a family member to really take care of the children and offer traditions to the family and pass family lore down. there are things specifically you can do to make this work. you say do a trial run? how do you do that? come for two days and boot them out if it doesn t work? a family i talked to decided to live with their adult children part-time and weren t ability ability able to sell their house at first but that s why they did it. talking about your parents, if my mother moved in, i would want her to live there scott-free and that may not be possible. it may not be possible but you have to be realistic. it sounds almost callous. you need to know what of their money goes towards household expenses. are they getting a pension, what will they use and if they can t support, what will they use. if you re combining two households, you may not need four tvs, two couches and sell some things and that can help with expenses and divide the chores around the house. and you can reconsider as things change. but you have basis. and work together, one of the up sides with anything. you have to decide what it is you need and what the receiving family needs. also, to be flexible. life is in the details, as someone said. who s folding the laundry and how will you be getting along with one another. it s also being about being forgiving. focusing on the positive. contributing in a meaningful way and getting acktive. what does that mean? not only in the family but outside the family. so you re not dependent on your children to give you pleasure. have your own friends. have your own friends and social life and be aware what your plans are. be very mindful and respectful of personal space. you say communicate and maintain humor and communal and private space. i need my private time, mom. it s not to be offensive, just to recognize everyone needs their own space but we are a family. how do you really define yourself as a family with this new change. be adult about it. you are taking in your older parents. you re all adults here, realize that and don t expect mom is going to come home and do the laundry and cooking for you and childcare. maybe that s not what she s capable of doing. really understand that. you will be adult roommates, maybe even friends, hopefully friends, but really be up front about it. people s personalities don t change. it s important to remember if someone by nature is very controlling and you haven t wanted to be controlled and haven t been controlled your whole life, you have to understand what are the limits and boundaries and have to say, mom, i appreciate your help. this is something i would like to do. you can do this for me and contribute in a meaningful way. a lot to think about. you ladies have given great tips. sharon and dale, thank you very much. coming up next, we reveal dangers in health clubs you want to know about. later, stocking stuffers for $10 or less. the all-new chevy cruze. msn autos called it the class of its class right now. but that s not the only story. it s got turn-by-turn navigation, onstar, an available six-speed automatic transmission, remote keyless entry, and 10 air bags. it s a big story for a compact car. the all-new chevrolet cruze. get used to more. very well-qualified lessees can get a low-mileage lease on a 2011 chevrolet cruze ls for around $159 a month. call for details. shake it up, shake up the happiness. (ho ho ho) wake it up, wake up the happiness. (ho ho ho) c mon ya ll.. it s christmas time ho ho hooooooo. gotta get that bacon! dog: yummy. crunchy. bacon. bacon. bacon. there, in that bag! mom: who wants a beggin strip? dog: me! i d get it myself but i don t have thumbs! yum, yum, yum. it s beggin ! hm. i love you! beggin strips! there s no time like beggin time! get great last minute gifts wednesday through friday at sears! save fifty to sixty percent off coats, sweaters fleece and sleepwear for the family. this keurig brewer is one, oh nine, ninety-nine. plus, save sixty percent off fine jewelry. be the santa you want to be. find your santa at sears.com [ female announcer ] there s a place called hidden valley where kids not only eat their vegetables, they can t get enough. hidden valley ranch. makes vegetables delectable. and now make lettuce a real salad with hidden valley salad kits. everything you need all in one bag, like garlic croutons, lemon pita bites, parmesan cheese, and caesar dressing. turn plain lettuce into a hidden valley salad. this morning on today s health. five hidden dangers at the health club as you think about resolutions and gym membership may be high on your list. jamie is an associate editor of consumer reports. good morning. a lot of people will go back to the gym but there are hidden dangers. i was surprised to learn skin infections are pretty prevalent. this is what is called mersa in the news. and over the last ten years or so, it s become an issue in the community, especially crowded settings, there might be skin on skin contact like health clubs. how do you know if you have it? it usually shows up near a cut or opening in the skin. it can present like a boil, big red blistery looking thing, a boil. some of them do clear up on their own. if you develop a fever or area around, might look like a spider bite, becomes red or painful. you want to see your doctor seen and means the infection entered the bloodstream. it could be threatening. precautions to takal the gym? a great idea to wipe off the gym equipment you use with alcohol sanitizing spray most gyms provide. put a towel over a mat if you re doing yoga or stretching. don t share towels, one way you might not think of that this can spread from person to person. watch your hands after working out. absolutely. another hazard, dirty swimming pools. yeah. how bad is this? a cdc report that came out in 2010 earlier this year, found more than 2500 health club pools had to be closed because of problems with sanitation. can you tell visually by looking into the water if it s somehow not safe? you can. a clean pool should be totally clear. you should be able to see the bottom. if it looks murky or cloudy or a strong chemical order, think twice about going in. poor sanitation. that is the gym s responsibility and others are your own responsibility and knowing your own body and you talk about strained muscles, too? right. weight room is up about 50% from a decade ago and most injuries occur when people use free weights, dropping a weight and barbell on their foot and lifting too much weight or not being properly conditioned. precautions, you have to warm up and stretch in advance? definitely warm up in advance, especially during the winter months, your muscles are less cold and pliable and more easily injured and do just 15 repetitions to start. no more. if that starts to get easy, you increase the weight. heart attacks are common especially for people recovering from a cold or flu. how much depends on your own age or weight for instance? definitely, older age and cardiovas cu lar disease are the main risk factors for having a heart attack brought on by vigorous exercise. what a lot of people don t realize having been sick with the flu or being fatigued can put you at a heightened risk. you want to scale back on your workout if you recently had a bout with the flu or very tired. talk with your doctor if you have heart disease or cardiovascular risk factors or previously sedentary. eye injuries are pretty common as well. what kind of activity would endanger your eye at the gym? racket sports are the riskiest. make sure you re wearing protective eyewear. that means a polycarbon nat lens that is shatter proof and if you are prescription glasses, wear it with polycarbonate. it s almost enough to make you not want to go to the gym but you can t use that as an excuse. coming up, we head to the north pole to see how preparations are going for the day. plus from makeup to batteries, stocking stuffers for ten bucks or less. and if you wake up often in the middle of the night. rest is here, on the wings of lunesta. lunesta helps you fall asleep and stay asleep, so you can wake up feeling rested. when taking lunesta, don t drive or operate machinery until you feel fully awake. walking, eating, driving, or engaging in other activities while asleep, without remembering it the next day, have been reported. abnormal behaviors may include aggressiveness, agitation, hallucinations or confusion. in depressed patients, worsening of depression, including risk of suicide, may occur. alcohol may increase these risks. allergic reactions, such as tongue or throat swelling, occur rarely and may be fatal. side effects may include unpleasant taste, headache, dizziness and morning drowsiness. ask your doctor if lunesta is right for you. get lunesta for a $0 co-pay at lunesta.com. sleep well, on the wings of lunesta.
