day that oil and water don't mix. >> reporter: president obama promised americans that the oil gushing will end but cautioned it could take months. >> there will be damage done to the gulf coast and there will be economic damage. we have to make sure bp is responsible for it. >> reporter: a new poll shows americans are giving the government response to this disaster a higher negative rating than the response to katrina back in 2005. the new containment cap is capturing about 460,000 gallons of oil a day but it is still not known how much is leaking from the damaged well. bp eventually plans to replace the cap with a slightly bigger one that will provide a tighter fit and collect more oil. >> we're dealing with an aggregation of hundreds of thousands of patches of oil. >> reporter: workers rescuing birds using dish detergent. >> the birds seem to be doing ok with it. healthy birds covered in oil but relatively good health. >> reporter: a week into hurricane season there are concerns of what could happen if the gulf takes a direct hit. >> if you get a strong hurricane that moves into the gulf and upwells the plume it's going to come to the surface and somebody's going to get hit again. >> reporter: just one more thing for gulf coast residents to worry about. jeremy hubbard, abc news. the national aquarium in baltimore is ready to lend a hand. the aquarium can actually convert some of their pools into intensive care units for injured sea turtles from the oil spill. the aquarium is housing four turtles now that were injured in other parts of the country. they will be released in june to make room for gulf turtles. many marylanders are planning trips to florida this summer and they are growing more and more concerned about plans to travel there because of the oil spill. travel experts are offering this advice. stay in close contact with the travel agent if you have a hotel or condo where you plan to vacation. >> the airlines will allow to reschedule, give a different destination. they are pretty flexible with that kind of stuff. so we'll help them in any way we can to still salvage their vacation. >> you can find out what cancellations options are out diamstandard. joran van der sloot, the primary suspect in natalee holloway's disappearance confessed to murder, not to killing holloway but another woman in lima last week. abc2 news linda so here to tell us what police are doing this morning. >> reporter: van der sloot says he killed stefany flores out of anger. he says he broke her neck when he found out she used his laptop to look up information about his past. 21-year-old stefany flores was last seen alive on may 30th entering van der sloot's hotel room in lima. hours later van der sloot is seen leaving the room with his bags. police say flores was beaten to death. investigators are planning to take him back to the hotel today to reconstruct the events leading up to the woman's murder. van der sloot confessed last night and could be formally charged as soon as this morning. under peruvian law when a suspect confesses they often get a lighter sentence which is why van der sloot may have confessed. >> he doesn't look disheveled or disturbed, if in fact he committed this murder. that does say something about him. >> reporter: van der sloot has long been the primary suspect in natalee holloway's 2005 disappearance in aruba. he was arrested twice but released both times for lack of evidence. in the studio, linda so, abc2 news. there's a high sense of urgency to move the case forward, according to the head of homicide regarding a police officer accused of killing a former marine. police say 32-year-old tyrone brown was shot nine times by gahiji tshamba, a police officer outside of eden's lounge in mount vernon. the case was presented to the state's attorney's office monday. investigators say they know brown made physical advances towards a female friend of the officer and there was some sort of altercation. the officer identified himself and started shooting. investigators are now talking to several witnesses. >> probably, if this has not already occurred, ask for a walkthrough of the crime scene. >> the department's handgun policy is in question. it basically states off-duty officers must carry their guns if they are in the city unless if the officer deems it inappropriate. in other big cities such as miami and boston, for example, there are strict rules saying off-duty officers cannot carry their weapons if they are drinking. 5:47. you are not getting on that 6:47 plane to boston marshall international where yes, today the tsa will start using the full body scans on passengers. basically they are looking for any type of weapons through your clothing. starting this week, this is the primary method of security, in the past it was the secondary method but not anymore. these devices show correct images of the body and can detect items hidden in clothing. travelers are a little nervous about this. they are worried these scanners could increase cancer risk through radiation exposure. experts at the american college of radiology say it's not likely. authorities say both types of scanners used by the tsa use low-level rays that pose no cancer risk.
