and 8-year-olds, they called him the hammer. they called him the hammer. thanks to his fake i.d. at 5 years old. >> al: fake i.d. in kindergarten. kids, don't do that at home. third down. the 38 yard line. dallas clark is back in the game. sets up on the right de tight. keep it on the ground. clark. and again the defense does all it can do right now. that's going to take us down to 50 or so seconds, and the colts will have fourth down. for the moment they're going to leave their offense out and just spend all spin all the time they can off the clock. >> cris: that's a little interesting decision to make there. >>l: well, peyton if nothing else will try to get them offside. and i would have been shocked if they would have snapped . why give washington the ball at the 38 yard line. >> referee: delay of game, number 18, five-yard penalty, fourth down. >> al: in this situatioit doesn't even matter. washington might even decline that penalty. hat they'd likto do is give the punter, mcafee, a lile extra room to angle one. >> cris: sometimes it's hard for those punters to take a little off. it's like a lf wedge. they like being back a little bit. they can take a full swing. but now these punters are all so good at that reverse spin ball, not many of these balls go into the end zone anymore. >> al: if you've got a punt block in your book, an a plus one, this is when you want to use it. you'veot banks setting up back at his 10 yard line. justin snow to snap it. and mcafee to boot it. and that kick is going to bounce into the end zone. so 32 seconds and mcnabb wil get the ball at the 20 yard line. >> cris: well, and remember they don't have any time-outs available to them. so you want to tnk they can certainly run something in the middle of the field at this point, but then they have to really fly to get up there to have another opportunity. i wonder if they just go hail mary right off the bat. remember, donovan mcnabb one of those guys however far you want him to throw it, he can almost throw it in the e zone from here. >> al: yep. from the 20, mcnabb swings it deep over the middle, and a one-handed interception francisco who hauls it in and stays inbounds at the 43 yard line. signed f last week's game, brought him back after they cut him when he was hurt in training camp. a member of their super bowl team. and of course they're all looking up at the scoreboard here to see if this is going to be reviewed from upstairs to make sure francisco stayed inbounds after the pick. one-hand grab. does he have possession? yes, he does. right shoulder goes onto the chalk but at that pot he has possession of the ball. cris: al, can i tell you how close that was to being an 80-yard touchdown? francisco timed that perfectly. he got his hand on it. but if that thing tips off his hands and goes over the top, there's nobody else on the planet behind there. gi them credit. francisco, angerer, both made key plays and that was close. >> al: and a ton of injuries. i measanders out for most of the year. they expect him back hopefully later in the year. they bring francisco back off the street, ddai back in the locker room. they get the job done, thanks in good measure, of course, to one number 18. indianapolis wins it by a score of 27-24. coming up next, it will be the gillette post game report after thse messages from your local tv stations. [ male announcer ] it's sunday afternoon. time for football on verizon fios. the nfl in 100% fiber-optic hd quality. that's a good start. but what's this? i can check my fantasy stats without changing the channel. and get an alert any time my team enters the red zone. and then watch every red zone playn nfl redzone. watch out couch you've got competition as daddy's favorite. it's time for fios. call theerizon center for customers with disabilities at 800-974-6006 tty/v visit verizon.com/getfios. the colts go to 4-2 and have a share of first place in the afc south. washington falls to 3-3. five of the six washington games so far this year have come down to the last possession. they he won some close ones. tonight theyose a close one. and with two of tonight's winners, soon to be the longest running quarterback-center combination in nfl history, peyton manning and jeff saturday, here's andrea kremer. >> andrea: thank you very much. well, jeff, you doubled your average in the running gamin this game. how did you have success on the ground? >> well, we knew coming in they're going to try to st our passing game so they bring in the nickel or the dime package in. we talked about it all week. you've got to be able to run the ball. joe and mike both did great job of making cuts and keeping us in the game. >> andrea: the colts have the best road record in the nfl since 2002, obviously one more game tonight. why are you so successful on the road? >> well, i think caldwell does a great job of telling us to keep our poise, our confidence. we come in here and ju play the style of football we know how to play. it doesn't matter where you're playing. if you stay consistent, you win football games. >> andrea: now, you and peyton set a record -- tied a record tonight, 160 games, consecutive starts in the regular season by a quarterback and his center. what's the chemistry with you guys? >> well, it's just been a privilege to play with him for this many yrs and that ma games. we're real proud of that record. we both feel like we've been there for our teammates every single sunday. that's a lot of games. i'm not sure we belong in that company but it sure is a great honor and we're real proud of it. >> andrea: peyton, all week you've talked about we need to carve out identity on this team. did you learn anything? what did you learn tonight? >> yeah, i think it shows we can be whatevewe need to be. i mean obviously, like jeff said, washgton came in here really to stop the pass. so we can run the ball. i thought addai's two runs on that one touchdown drive were just huge. everybody put a little pressure on washington because they said he they can do me than just throw the ball, they can run it and it keeps the defense off balance. >> andrea: more injuries tonight with addai specifically after having had a terrific game. >> he really did. we hope he's okay. obviously gary brackett didn't play tonight. our defense did a great job stepping up. young guys stepped up and played really well. that's why it's football, you've goto win as a team. to come in and win on the road, it was really a good victory for us. >> andrea: you go into a bye. what do you need to accomplish in the downtime. >> we need to get healthy. i don't know what the practice schedule will be but it needs to be suitable getting guys injured back. we hope to get them back on the field. we are a little beat up so the bye is comi at a great ti. >> andrea: great work tonight, thanks. >> now let's swing things over to 30 rock and hook up with peyton's former coach, jeff saturday's former coach, tony dungy. we'll start with your reaction to this one. surprised that the redskins kept it close right down to the last possession as ey did? >> i was a little surprised with the colts. they made some uncharacteristic mistakes, fumbles, turnovers in the red zone, things that kind of allowed it to stay clo. they may be a lile bit of a tired football team. peyton was lobbying jim caldwell already, i think he hope jim listens to the pregame show d gives them some time off next week. >> what would you do with a team at 4-2, a veteran team that's beat up a little bit. if it was still your team would you give them some extra days off on the bye we? >> i would, and i think jim definitely will. they don't need extra practice time, especially on offense. all those injuries, i think he'll either give them an extra day off or really go light and go with no pads. >> one of today's headlines was the return of ben roethlisberger. he threw three touchdowns. the steelerson over the browns. what diyou see in roethlisberger today? >> i was really impressed the way ben came out. he didt try to do too much. he played the game just as it came to him. and he really made the steelers a complete team today. they had been playing stifling defense in the first four weeks. they had been running the ball really well. now the threat of the pass, him throwing the ball, backed up throwing in the red zone, moving around, making plays t of the pocket, it looked like the old ben roethlisberger and this is going to make them a very tough team. i thought ey looked great today. >> we turn now to mike have pro football talk on nbcsports.com. mike, among the topics tomorrow in your monday ten-pack, vikings at packers next sunday nit on nbc. meanwhile the league continues its investigation of brett favre. any new developments expected this week? >> well, bob, brett favre wi meet with nfl security director milt alrich on tuesday of this week. tuesday is an important day because if a suspension is going to be imposed in fi week, it will be imposed by tuesday, so there's no way brett favre is going to be suspended before tht return, that second return to lambeau field. then even after that, there are appeal rights. there may be other steps in the investigation we don't know about. this is still a process that's going to take a while. it's virtually impossible, probably complely impossible that favre would be suspended by sunday. in fact after today's game against the cowboys, favre was asked by fox is he worried about this week and all he said was, yes, i'm worried about going ck to green bay. >> here's a troubling ongoing story for the league. today another series of injuries resulting from helmet-to-helmet hits, most notably desean jackson of the eagles who suffered a severe concussion, almost certainlyon't play next week, might not play for two or three weeks. what can the nfl do to minimize these hits? >> well, bob, the nfl has to enforce the rules currently on the books. it was three yers ago the nfl sent out a memo to all teams saying for flagrant helmet-to-helmet hits ejections will be impod and three years later no one has been ejected for a helmet-to-helmet hit during the game. today he should have been ejected for the hit to todd heap. rodney harrison of football night in america has lived through what that message is from a suspension and how it changes behavior. suspensions need to be imposed and the rules need to be changed. i think all helmet-to-helmet hits should result in penalty, a fine and eventually a suspension, egardless of whether a player is defenseless. if a player leads with a helmet, that needs to be a penalty, especially now th this increased sensitivity to concussions. we need to take every step possible to avoid concussions from happening. >> besides those injuries as a result of the head-to-head collisionshich we just mentioned, what's the latest on some of the day's other key injuries? >> well, bob, josh cribbs, the receiver from the cleveland browns, had a helmet-to-helmet hit, left with a concussion. he's expected to be ready to go next week when the browns play the saints. zack from the lions had a scary neck injury. he was immobilizedcarted off, taken to a hospital. the word is that he's fine, he has full motion and he even put a message on twitter tonight that he's okay. and finally antonio gates, the pro bowl tight end from thsan diego chargers has an ankle and foot injury. he was in a boot after the game. he's going to have an mri tomorrow. he's in a significant amount of pain, so he may not be playing next week when the chargers face the patriots. >> mike, thanks. additional woes for the chargers who fell to 2-4 with a loss at st. louis. don't forget, you can checout more from mike on pro football talk on nbcsports.com with his mond ten-pack. all the latest news and notes. we go back to al and cris to wrap things up right after this. it's the sion proglide challenge. woow! hey man, how ya doin'? how's your shave? kinda like tuggin' and pullin'. see how shaving can cause irritating tug and pull? [ male announcer ] that's why gillette's introducing the revolutionary new fusion proglide. it glides... like literally. [ male announcer ] now, fusion proglide has been engineered with gillette's thinnest blades ever so it gdes for less tug and pull. turns shaving into gliding. and skeptics into believers. new fusion proglide. and warm up before u shave for incredible comfort with new proseries thermal scrub. the play of the game wasn't the touchdown, but it led to one. this was afterashington made it a three-point game at 17-14. joseph addai, who would later leave the game with an injury, broke off a 46-yard run, the longest of his career, and finished that drive with a 13-yard touchdown run to make it a ten-point game. the colts who never trailed tonight go on to win the game by three points. you know, i look at this game, cris, in a way washington hung in there, but for some reason i always got the feeling it's lik a guy trying to -- you're climbing the ladder, you're trying to get to the top rung and you just are not going t gethere and that's the colts for you. >> cris: and you don't t to peyton manning either. i thought if there was a major difference in this game, the washington redskins' plan was to really bring some prsure, bring some blitzes, especially right in peyton manning's face, and they never got there. every time they tried that particular look, they were stymied on it and consequently peyn manning was picking them apart and they could run. >> al: what we've seen, two sunday night appearances for indianapolis, they get a running game going. they beat thegiants with a tremendous running game that night in indianapis. of course when they can run the ball, they're almost never going to lose. >> cris: when you have six and seven defensive backs on the field all the time, you ought to be able to run it a little t. it's really an amazing tribute to peyton manning, althe looks that he gets that nobody else in the league gets. i mean nobody else sees these inds of defense and they do it because of him. >> al: we're going to run to green bay next week. you talk about story lines all over the place. we know abo brett favre, we'll see what happens during the week. minnesota in a way kind of -- i don't want to say saving its season today but that was gigantic and now dallas isn a position where they're going to have tsave their season sooner than later. green bay with a ton of injuries, another very disspiriting loss today. an interesting matchup. >> cris: yeah, it is. for minnesota, thewon the game they had to win and they are back in that race now. >> al: wisconsin next week. >> cris: can't wait. >> al: brats and all the rest. that will do it from washington. next sunday night, the green bay packers against the minnesota ikings on sunday night football. "football night in amera" begins at 7:00 eastern and 4:00 pacific. for now al michaels, cris collinsworth, area kremer, our whole crew saying good night from fedex field in landover, maryland, where the colts beat the redskins. -- captions by vitac -- www.vitac.com can a smartphonebe its own guardian gel ?
