investigation is pointing that this all may have started in a kitchen just before 12:30 this morning. it quickly went up in flames. >> i don't know what happened. the whole thing happened so fast. it was unbelievable. good thing they pulled the alarm. >> reporter: two firefighters were injured while trying to battle. one with serious but nonlife threatening injuries and another firefighter was released with no life threatening injuries. the damage that was left is significant. dozens of residents stood and watched as the building burned this morning and left wondering what would happen next. >> i don't know what to make of it. we're just trying to recoup and get our stuff together. >> reporter: but with the light of date came some calm. red cross volunteers were able to make a lot right very quickly. >> we've been able to give them food and a place to stay. that's all taken care of and they are all in a place both temporary and a permanent one identified. >> reporter: knowing what is next for them has made the difference. >> thank god for red cross. they've been providing help. >> reporter: residents heard that the fire started when someone left some food cooking on a stove and that may have been what sparked all of this. gern, firefighters are saying that their preliminary investigation is pointing to the same thing but the official cause has not been discussed yet. >> firefighters say lightning sparked two separate house fires in loudoun county just before 11:00 last night. four people who lived at the home are now staying with neighbors. firefighters say that the flames caused about $40,000 in damage. officials estimate the fire in sterling will cost about $80,000 to fix. three adults were forced out of that home. no one was hurt in either of the fires. here's a story that you saw first on 4. you can see where the bullets shattered the back window. the woman pulled into a gas station and called police. police search for clues. no one was injured and the police are still investigating. today is the deadline for all brac rechl dagss to go into effect. there have been no major traffic issues reported in alexandria or in the bethesda naval hospital in maryland. that's where the new walter reed medical center is opening. 6400 employees have already started to move in. they will continue to do that over the next year. one of the central figures into the hiring practices is is due in court. suleman brown will be in court for a civil hearing. brown, a former mayoral candidate, has accused the gray administration in offering him a job in exchange for bad-mouthing mayor fenty 100 homes have been condemned and 38 families have been staying at a temporary shelter that closes tomorrow. fema officials will take a look at the damage in marlboro, maryland. turning now to the weather, not quite as nice as it was yesterday but the start of a cool down. let's start with tom. >> not as hot as yesterday. temperatures will be about fen degrees cooler than yesterday. looking off to the west, we have a lot of cloudiness moving in from the west and the cool front moving our way bringing a few showers around the region as well. radar showing the showers are scattered from the northern suburbs into western maryland and west virginia. the closest rain getting a few sprinkles in southern montgomery county, parts of loudon and drifting off to the northeast out of the southwest. temperatures generally in the low to mid-70s throughout most of the region and we'll hold steady here. the average temperatures this afternoon in the mid- and upper 70s. a few isolated spots. southern mare land, may reach around 80 or so. most areas staying in the 70s. rest of the afternoon, cloudiness around and a possibility of a passing shower or perhaps an isolated thundershower this afternoon. cooler tonight with a wind. we'll talk about that coming up. the red and gold are going green. megan? >> reporter: hey, barbara, take a look behind me. you can see this if you're pulling into the fedex field parking lot. it looks like a new carport that they installed but they are solar panels. they've installed 8,000 here at the stadium. some are in the parking lot and some will be mounted on the side of the stadium. they have a big sculpture that is made out of solar panels and lights up using the energy from the sun, it's sort of an exciting thing that they've unveiled. it's going to make a difference in terms of the use of electricity. what they say is that on a game day, these solar panels will be providing 20% of their electricity. their electrical needs on game days. on days where there is is not a game, the panels will actually supply 100% of the electricity. if they've got any of the electricity left over, they will be in a position where they can give that back to the grid. so kind of an exciting thing that they've done here at the stadium and we talked a while ago to redskins owner, and he described why he's going green. >> why are you doing it? >> it's the right thing to do. it's something that you're proud of doing for the environment, for the future, we believe and understand that it's taken place here and the shift and transformation of the united states and being involved. being early is really special for us. >> and another interesting program that they've got here as well, they've got powering stations, ten of them here in the parking lot. so folks can come and plug their electric cars into the power stations and it will be free on game days. again, there are ten of them. they are scattered around the parking lot. you can come here where the electric car and watch the game and while you're watching the game, you can be charging the car out in the parking lot. barbara? >> that falls, minnesota. that is the earliest in the season that that part of minnesota has had that cold of a temperature. incredible to think 20 degrees on september 15th in northern minnesota. well, that cold air, some of that is coming down this way. it moderates as it comes south. it's still going to be kbit chilly. we're looking off to the west now. it's all cloudy there. we have a little bit of sunshine coming through the overcast in northwest washington. quite a bit of sunshine farther to the east and south of washington. right now, quite overcast over the mall. there's the live picture from the city camera. right now it's at 76 at reagan national and dewpoint in the 60s. wind out of the northeast. a very slow moving cool front approaching from the west. and that has been producing showers and thundershowers from earlier this morning and last night. much of that rain has moved up into eastern pennsylvania. but this cloud cover is coming your way here in another few hours and across the mountains, the radar showing much of this rain breaking up, a few scattered light showers in montgomery county. a few sprinkles there. else, there cloud cover and no rain around. where they've had the rain, it's in the low and mid-6 oh 0s. generally in the 70s and eastern shore where they have more sun. temperatures there are around 80 degrees now. here's the close-up view of what has been happening over the last 12 hours. we had the nocturnal thunderstorms last night and kite a bit of cloudiness is moving in from the west and sweeping over the region over the next few hours. and then this evening we clear out and have a flort west breeze gusting to around 30 miles per hour. that will bring in the chill in the upper midwest earlier this morning and then clouds around during the day on friday. for the rest of this thursday afternoon, expect quite a bit of cloudiness, just a chance of a passing shower. perhaps a thundershower. but more than likely, light to moderate shower coming through, too. it holds steady in the 70s and this evening wheel notice the big change. sun sets at 7:17. we'll be in the upper 60s, early evening, down into the 50s by midnight and by dawn tomorrow, likely much of the region it will be in the 40s, starting off tomorrow morning. then on friday afternoon, tomorrow with the clouds in and out and bit of a northeast breeze, we will only make it into the 60s during the afternoon. and then friday night into saturday morning, we should bottom out around 50 degrees or so. a very cool start to saturday morning. great day for outdoor weather, kayaking, autumn-like weekend coming up. it's a 1:00 kickoff and they should be in the upper 60s, right around the game time and then during the day maybe hovering around 70s. good weather for football and all of the high school and college games friday night and saturday and sunday for the skins. as we start off next week, they should be warming up a bit. clouds around tuesday >> we are. my mom, patty cumming, she's funny about it. she is getting used to the things that come out of my mouth. but the show, you know, is on network television, so we're going to try to keep it somewhat clean. >> it pushes the envelope. >> it pushes it a lot and we're surprised nbc has been so supportive of what we want to do and push us sometimes to go even further. so i apologize in advance, america. >> >> my intern grown up. chris, we didn't mean to leave you out. >> you two know each other, and have a thing, not making me feel excluded. >> we're glad you're there so we can have a look at you, too. whitney is going to be next thursday, september 22nd, premiering at 9:30. so we will be watching. can't wait to see you. >> thank you, barbara. >> thank you so much. coming up in the next half hour, a frightening encounter for with woman in her 70s. plus, get ready for a big drop in temperatures tonight. tom is back with how cool is it's going to get. and the white house party crashers are right now traffic on major roadways is moving at a normal pace even though today is the day for all brac recommendations to go into effect. many leaders have feared that it would cause gridlock on the roads but many moves have been phased in before now or will take place gradually in the coming months. around midnight near the chain bridge, you can see where the bullets shattered the back window. the woman driving pulled into a gas station and called the police. no one was injured. a fairfax county neighborhood is on high alert after one couple experienced a violent breakin around 8:00 in the morning in the 1500 block of pathfinder lane. police say a couple in their 70s heard the thieves break into their home and the woman confronted the burglars. the suspects then attacked her and restrained the husband upstairs while they searched the home for valuables. neighbors are shocked. >> if you're going to be stealing things, that's one thing. i can't imagine that she did anything to them except yell at them. >> i'm worried about that type of aggressive behavior and the willingness to take some force. >> police say the woman was not badly attacked and the thieves got away with her purse. anyone with information is asked to call the police. this morning police need your help to find two suspects accused of sexually assaulting a girl in anne arundel county. she was walking her dog when she was attacked tuesday afternoon. the suspects are two men in their 20s last seen in a four-door sedan with fainted paint. police in maryland are hoping to find a sexual predator police say she woke up around 3:30 in the morning to find a stranger in bed with her. she screamed and he ran out through the front door. police have stepped up patrols in the area. they are working to see if this case is connected to a similar incident that took place off campus earlier this year. there's a new revelation in the death of caylee anthony. her grandparents are divided on how they think the 2-year-old died, though. the joint interview on the dr. phil show says that he believes casey or someone with her drugged caylee and caused the girl's death. cindy believes that caylee drowned. 25-year-old casey anthony was aacquitted of murdering her daughter. the fbi is investigating after several celebrities phones were hacked. the fbi won't confirm how many were hacked but said that several high-profile figures are involved. it is 11:35. we're going to check in now with tom for the latest on the forecast. >> clouds are closing in from the west. you can see it's beginning to lower a bit and it's associated with a cool front triggering showers and thunderstorms since last night ahead of that front and behind the front out in the mountains there are passing showers that are moving on through. closer to washington, just a few sprinkles there in prince georges county. no storms around now and temperatures cooled to our west where the cloud cover is thicker. upper 70s, southern maryland and much of virginia where they've had sunshine this morning as well as on the eastern shore. and as we look at what has been happening over the last 12 hours, you can see it is thickening up as it moves out from the west. it's quite cloudy for much of the afternoon but then clearing out tonight, we fallout of the 70s and into the 40s by dawn tomorrow and then on friday, partly sunny and highs in the 60s and more on sunday. good wea
