kirky and ruth ann. right now he's facing an unrelated weapons charge. he also has a criminal history in cumberland, maryland. we have details you'll only see on news4. >> kevin remembers the old claw foot bath tub he kept here. he said severance, who lived here from 2001 to 2005 ran afoul of the neighbors because of his bathing habits. >> he bathed in the nude and he was very economical. he would wait till rain water. >> reporter: he said he named his b & b after his son. he said his neighbor planted fruit trees in the yard and donated the fruit to the needy. >> maybes say this is mr. severance's car long after he moved. they say he frequently drove it to virginia to visit people and also drove it to do target shooting in west virginia. they say severance was seen putting his guns into the vehicle. raleigh say it's clear his neighbor was an educated man but said severance would grow fanatical discussing what he would describe as injustice in his legal battle to have access to his son. he sold the home and moved away not long after allegedly having indecent contact with an underage girl. those charges were later dropped. >> it's a shocker but in a way it's like there's a fine line between, you know, genius and insanity and i think he walked that line. >> reporter: severance apparently maintained a friendship with at least one person here in cumberland. they say he was seen here as recently as two years ago. the prosecutor has asked the judge to keep severance locked up, calling him a flight risk. police say he went to the russian embassy on march 7th asking for asylum but was turned away. he is being held without bond pending another hearing on wednesday. >> well, this snowy monday is almost over. the commute tomorrow might still be a bit tricky. some of the roads are going to refreeze overnight. doug, what can we expect tomorrow? >> they're already starting to do that. temperatures have fallen into the 20s across much. area. we still have a little bit in way of snow down there. right along 66, also reports of snow around centerville, manassis, right over towards buoy. there's little band, a little thin band that's not going to amount to anything but it may cover the car again across our region. you know we've had a lot of snow this season, over 30 inches at reagan national, mth what we normally get, 38 inches near dulles, 48 inches out toward bwi. we've seen a busy winter for sure. now we have a winter weather advisory toward the south and west, harrisonberg, down toward stanton. it could be expanded. we'll talk more about that in my forecast. >> schools will be open tomorrow but many districts are opting for two-hour delays because of icy roads, including fairfax, and culpepper, fredericksburg are planning on delays tomorrow and d.c. public schools will open on time. we have a complete list at the bottom of your screen and on nbc washington.com. >> some of the lanes in route 50 in maryland are still closed tonight. crews are trying to move a tanker truck across the road. it happened near enterprise road in buoy. >> things are moving a lot better on route 50, both east and westbound, after a serious tie-up a few hours earlier. a tanker hit the jersey barrier separating eastbound and westbound traffic in bowie. it was determined that the tanker's cargo didn't pose a threat. no other vehicles were involved, though the driver had to be cut from the truck cab. maryland state police say the driver suffered a medical condition that caused him to leave the roadway. officials aren't saying just what that truck driver's medical condition was but we are told he's expected to recover. >> we're learning more tonight about the victims of saturday's deadly house fire in arlington. in cell phone video, you can see how intense the blaze was. neighbors tell us a man went backin side the burning home trying to save the woman who was his companion. we learned she was 74 years old, a retired nurse who was in a wheelchair. >> she was a family woman. she took care of a lot of her family members, and they were all very close. >> family and friends had been leaving flowers at a makeshift memorial outside the house. investigators have not yet said what started this fire. >> in prince goerges county tonight, a family is displaced after a relative slammed an suv into the house. police say the family member was moving the suv when it lost control. no one was physically injured. >> more new questions about that missing aliirliner in east asia. jim? >> malaysian officials have now released a new timeline based on that final voice transmission from the cockpit of the missing plane. that just adds to the confusion over who may have tampered with the plane's communications. now they believe the last words came from the co-pilot before -- before any of the automated signals were disabled. that means someone else could have got i don't knten inside t and turned off the signals after the co-pilot checked in with traffic control. investigators are looking into the background of the pilot and co-pilot but tonight friends and family say it's unthinkable they were involved. >> the speculation of pilot suicide or pilot hijacking, i just can't imagine with his character and what we knew of him, it just wouldn't make any sense. >> also today the u.s. navy pulled a warship off the search. other long-range american military aircraft are still helping look for the plane and the 239 people on board. at the live desk, i'm jim hanley. >> thank, jim. a man from california is facing terrorism charges after he was arrested near the u.s./canadian border. prosecutors say 20-year-old nichol nichol nichol nicholas touissant claims he was a student and the complaint alleges he talked about a plot to bomb the l.a. subway system. >> chris brown is locked up in l.a. right now, arrested last friday at rehab after making comments about being good at using guns and knives. his attorney asked for his release but the judge ordered him to stay behind bars for another month. brown also faces a misdemeanor assault charge for an incident outside a d.c. hotel last fall. >> in the campaign corruption investigation involving mayor vincent greg, the mayor's lawyer is making allegations of his own. he accuses the attorney of being out to get the mayor. a veteran attorney robert bennett say he and gray are ready to put up a fight in court. the mayor has apologized for the scandal involving his 2010 campaign. he denies being guilty in any way. last week businessman jeffrey thompson pleaded guilty to financing a shadow campaign and he implicated the mayor. today gray's lawyer told news4's tom sherrwood in his words, "i'm hoping he won't be indicted but if he does get indicted, he will go to trial and not make a plea." mayor gray is running for reelection. early voted started today. >> next, a man hangs out of his suv holding on for his life in a raging river. an incredible rescue caught on video. >> in arlington, a man said a snow plow driver was on the wrong side of the road and nearly hit him. he pulled out his phone and shot video. good morning nelly! woah. hey! have you ever tried honey nut cheerios? [ sparkle ] sweet. coming up -- >> earthquake. we're having an earthquake. >> a 4.4 earthquake rattled los angeles before sunrise today. millions felt the shaking but there we there was no reports of damage. the u.s. geological survey said this was the biggest earthquake in the l.a. area in five years. seismologists say earthquakes are an every day part of living in los angeles and while the area is due for a larger quake, today was not necessarily a precursor for the big one. >> a man trapped in his suv in the middle of a surging river in washington state. a witness saw the man veer off the road and into the river. the witness called 911 and went to the shoreline to keep the driver calm. he was taken to the hospital and treated for hypothermia. >> tv pitch man kevin trudeau is going to jail for ten years. a jury convicted him for selling a book he was barred from selling and earning $89 million. >> when the metro closes, it loses $89 million a day in fares. that's happened five times this winter. the department budgeted $63 million for snow removal in northern virginia. so far after today's clean-up they've spent about $185 million. the fly delays and cancellations have cost the airline industry about $6 billion. >> we're learning of this snow plow driver on the wrong side of the road, heading right for oncoming traffic. the plow almost ran him off the road. >> i was very upset. >> reporter: jason barry was outraged and tonight he still can't believe what he saw this morning. >> over a hill going the wrong way with a snow plow. >> reporter: that's his voice and he's shooting this cell phone video. take a look at this snow plow driver going down the wrong direction on military road in arlington on the snow covered, two-lane road. >> the plow is going the wrong way. >> reporter: jason turned around and followed the snow plow after he said the driver nearly hit him in his volkswagen, forcing him to veer off the side of the road. >> he was coming right at me in my lane and it was like move the car or you're going to die. >> reporter: you can see an suv coming down the hill, heading towards him. >> he can't stop. >> snow plow driver slammed on the brakes. >> reporter: arlington officials tell me they removed the driver from duty. in a written statement they say "we reviewed this incident with the team that took over snow operations at noon today in the preshift driver briefing, pointing out it demonstrated unacceptable and unsafe plowing technique and was contrary to our annual training for ice and snow removal operations. >> reporter: some people criticized barry for following the plow and posting this video. he said he did it to make the streets safer. >> i don't want this guy out there ever again. >> well, there are some exceptions but from what i saw, the snow plow crews did a really good job. i guess they've had a lot of practice this winter, haven't they? >> i talked to them before the season and there are some new drivers that did not have a lot of practice because we didn't have a lot of snow the last couple of years. this snow today was more snow than the last three years combined. that's my cell phone, don't worry about it. that snow across our area did bring some of the cherry blossoms. this is the kennedy center. these are different blossoms than the ones on the tidal basin. these normally come out about a week, a week and a half before the ones on the tidal basin. now, six snowstorms and 80% of our snow, well, we've seen that in the last six weeks. if you're getting a little sick of snowstorms and sick of snow, i love snow but i think i'm about done. maybe you are, too. we've seen that come through. the radar has been lit up with snow. this is the way it was right on through about 7:00, 8:00. then we saw just the showers but they were still coming down around 1:00 or 2:00. now more snow showers coming through, montgomery count oo, over toward centerville and chantilly, gainesville area all reporting light snow, along the montgomery county and toward rockville and college park seeing a little buiit more in t way of light snow. you may see a little dusting on the car. down to the south, it's a winter weather advisory. most of our region is not in this advisory. also notice around richmond, this is for some areas of freezes rain and drizzle, and this may be able to creep far enough up that some of our counties, maybe warrenton and winchester, you may see problems tomorrow morning. regardless, it going to be slick tomorrow because the temperatures are so cold. i think everyone will be on the slick side tomorrow morning. you probably know by now the areas that are fairly quick after all the snow that we've seen. we'll be 26 in d.c., 19 in manassis and starting off on a very cold note, today a high of 32, the first time we've seen a high temperature that cold since the 1940s in the month of march. that -- that is a cold day. future weather, tomorrow afternoon, here we are around 5:00, a few light showers. this would be rain, though, as we will see our temperatures rise a little bit. still on the chilly side. wednesday morning, we could see freezing rain around much of the area. during the afternoon, everyone warms well above freezing and we see a good chance of showers during the day on wednesday. and then things go calm just in time for spring to start. spring starts on thursday and look at that, 58 degrees, 55 degrees on friday. the first weekend of spring, what would you like? warmer weather. >> sunny, yes. >> how about 66 on saturday? that's better. it comes with a chance of showers. >> it does look like things cool off as we head toward next week. >> all this snow lwill be a distant memory soon. >> no, it won't. >> it's making people cranky. not us but other people. >> we have sports com so diana just told me that rg3 was in baltimore tonight. why in the world would he go to baltimore? >> i was thinking about this when i was walking into the studio. 24 weeks until the first game for the redskins. that's my pot of gold for you tonight. 24 weeks. wow, you guys are really enthusiastic about that. is anyone excited?
