good morning, everyone. welcome to today on a sunday morning. i m lester holt. even i m jenna wolfe. this bear must be mortified, everyone is taking pictures of it. you have to read the story awe couple of times. the reason i said it wasn t a joke it seems like a setup for a joke. he ends up in the car but car door gets closed, knocks it into neutral, flying down the driveway. it gets funnier from there. we ll talk about that later on. we ll talk about heat also, all been suffering, i say all the mid-atlantic, the east, northeast, many parts of the midwest and the suppressive heat. the midwest trying to recover from dangerous flooding, a dam in iowa collapsed on saturday. we ll bring you the latest from the weather from coast to coast in just a moment. meantime ships and work crews are moving back in place in the gulf today after they were forced to evacuate because of bonnie which turned out to be a bust. this comes as british newspapers are reporting this morning that bp s chief tony hayward might be stepping down this week. we re going to have an update in just a few minutes. a bit later on inside moo chelsea clinton s upcoming nuptials, a lot of rumors surrounding her wedding set for next saturday, from where the reception will take place to who is on the guest list it s hush-hush. we ll see what we can learn? are you invited? no. makes me feel better. ever do one of the lemonade stands when you were a kid? lemonade, kool-ade, something like that. out of the blue these girls got robbed while selling lemonade. coming up we ll tell you about the outpouring of support they ve received. who would rob a little kid? it actually ends well. let s start with the weather, a dam collapsed in iowa causing hundreds ofs residentso evacuate. the weather channel s janelle klein joins us from del high, iowa. good morning. reporter: good morning, lester. people who saw this dam collapse say it was straight out of an action movie, it took with it trees, power poles and a house. the road on each side of the dam is gone, crumbling into the water, about 700 people were forced to run for their lives, they had about a five-minute warning from sacy ree cc ccy si the dam broke. a storm people are calling an act of god. has there been a break from the weather at all? reporter: there has been a good break, a beautiful morning in del high but the damage is not over, a lot of homes and businesses are damaged from the storm and the concern now is downriver where the water may be entering into the ohio, the missouri, the mississippi river so authorities are keeping a close eye on the areas in case similar storms could cause problems. janel klein, thanks for your information. soaring temperatures and sweltering heat has left many in other parts of the country wondering when will the brutal heat wave end. nbc s rahema ellis. reporter: another heat advisory has been issued for new york this morning. on saturday, high temperature combined with smothering humidity made it feel like it was over 100 degrees. the hot, steamy weather triggered a flurry of thunderstorms in some parts of the country. and weather experts warned of the dangerous conditions up and down the east coast. one possible weather-related death happened in maryland, where paramedics say the heat likely played a role in the death of a 20-year-old man who was biking and had a heart attack. this is shaping up to be the warmest july on record, and we ve had the jet stream well to the north and that has been reinforcing the warm air. reporter: in the nation s capital, more scorching temperatures, that tourists from oregon were not accustomed to. not this hot and not this much humidity. reporter: back in new york, blistering temperatures seemed appropriate for a sand sculpting contest at coney island but the most some can do is wait it out and take advantage of anything that s cool. for today rehema ellis, nbc news, new york. now here s jenna. thanks. since the gulf dodged a bullet as bonnie faded away, the scramble to make up lost time is on. ships are getting back into place this morning as crews continue to work on plugging the gusher before another big storm stops work again. this as british newspapers are reporting this morning that bp s embattled ceo, tony hayward might be stepping down. nbc s charles hadlock is in venice, louisiana, with more. charles, good morning. reporter: good morning, jenna. bonnie fizzled out as it approached the gulf coast yesterday but turned out to be the biggest disruption so far in the 97-day-long effort to end the crisis. as bonnie washed out over south louisiana, the coast guard ordered bp to return its idled ships to the deepwater horizon site as quickly as possible. bonnie was making a bee line for the oil leak when the storm fell apart. almost all of the ships evacuated the rig site ahead of the storm except for ones providing live pictures of bp s new containment cap which has been holding back the flow of oil now for nine days. this is very good news because we left the cap in place and were able to contain any well going inoil going into the environment. reporter: workers were about to perform a static kill, the first step in a ten-day process to permanently seal the well. the frustration is felt by everybody, even those on shore. they finally got things rolling where they could get things accomplished out there and this is just going to delay it. reporter: gulf coast residents are trying to avoid another delay in protecting the beaches. nbc s mark potter is in mississippi. reporter: along the beaches, residents are breathing a sigh of relief, they, too, avoided a major storm and officials are urging bp and the federal government to quickly put back all the clean-up equipment and boom they removed from these beaches, fearing a storm. reporter: given the region answer sad history of storms like katrina and camille, few are complaining about the decision to play it safe. all of the vessels will be back on site by tomorrow. it will take several days to reconnect the equipment and the coast guard says the process to permanently seal the well could begin on friday. jenna? charles hadlock, charles, thank you. between the heat, flooding and the storm in the gulf when will it end? the weather channel s chris warren has the answer. good morning to you, jenna. we had record-breaking heat in the mid-atlantic, could see it again today. heat warnings and advisories out from the south up through the mid-atlantic. temperatures topping out again in the upper 90s, triple digits, that s what the thermometer will read. it s much more oppressive. factor in the humidity and it will feel like well into the triple digits. it will feel like it s 124 in richmond, and it could be days before any significant relief, jenna, comes to us. chris warren, thank you. now here answer lester. we want to turn to the war in afghanistan, the search for two american navy personnel who went missing on friday. jim miklaszewski is nbc s chief pentagon correspondent, monitoring the situation. what is the latest? this is the worst nightmares in afghanistan, there s still confusion exactly what did happen. what we did know is that these two sailors went missing on friday, as they were driving from one u.s. military compound to another there in kabul. what s still baffling however is how they ended up 80 miles to the south in logar province where the armored suv driven by the two sailors was first spotted. the taliban set up an ambush, there was a shoot-out, one american was apparently killed. now u.s. military officials will not confirm the details of that account but they can t refute it either. an intensive manhunt is under way, search operations there in that area of afghanistan this morning, u.s. military have set up checkpoints, passing out leaflets with photographs of the two soldiers or two sailors offering $20,000 reward. to the extent the taliban has acknowledged this does that suggest there are going to be some negotiations or demands for their release? well, there are some reports already that one taliban group, not sure who it is exactly, are demanding the release of taliban prisoners in exchange for the body of a dead american. however, u.s. military officials repeated rather strongly this morning it remains u.s. policy not to negotiate for the release of hostages. nbc s jim miklaszewski, mik, thanks so much. david gregory mott rater of meet the press, joins from us washington, d.c. good morning to you. good morning, lester. this is another troublesome episode in a difficult and deadly year for u.s. troops in afghanistan, a change of leadership recently. david the fact is we ve been reporting this but oil and other things have been competing for the headlines. is this going to become a growing crisis for the administration as americans start to focus on the number of deaths there? well, as that intensity increases. i don t think there s any doubt about it but we ve still seen over the years that there has been a kind of disengagement from the hell that is the afghanistan war for our troops day in and day out and there are bigger strategic questions that i think people are looking to washington to grapple with, and whether the strategy is really working. i don t think a determination can be made based on a horrible incident like this. it is still the larger picture of whether we re achieving our goals, defeating the taliban, whether the taliban now comes into the fold of a government. these are the very thorny issues that general petraeus and of course the president are dealing with. another story competing for the headlines is the economy. the president wants to focus people back on it. i know in the coming week after other distractions, you taugd to talked to timothy geithner the treasury secretary for this morning s program. you asked him how and when the economy is turning around. let me play the answer and we ll follow up. here it is okay. what you would expect is a more moderate paced recovery than is typical and that s what we re seeing but again you are seeing recovery. you re seeing private investment expand again, job growth starting to come back, and that s pretty encouraginencoura. that s a pretty optimistic answer. the american people convinced by that answer in the sense of optimism? no, clearly not. not if you look at the polling in terms of the satisfaction with how the president s handling the economy and even if you listen closely to secretary geithner, can he talk about moderate recovery, hiring beginning to come back, but it doesn t answer the question as to why there is still such anemic growth, such sluggishness when it comes to hiring, because businesses are not confident in what s going on in washington, they re not confident about the overall trajectory of the recovery and that s what the government has to deal with and examine what more it can do when the private sector isn t saying hey we re ready to move forward. ben bernanke wassation the outlook is unusually uncertain, that should make people worry. david a story out of the sunday times in the uk that could be a source of another potential controversy for the administration, details a letter from the administration sent to scottish authorities saying the u.s. would look more favorably on the compassionate release of the lockerbie bomber al megrahi, released for compassionate reasons, they would like that better than having him transferred to a libyan prison. does that jive with statements the president has made in the past on the subject? i can. i had already been awake and my story is what led up to that. i can say at that point it had been 90 minutes, after 45 minutes i decided i was wide awake i ll go investigate and grabbed my flashlight and my keys and my cell phone and slowly drove because intermittent honking, two to three beeps every two to five minutes and i was just on an investigation to solve my mystery. and the car was moving, right, when you saw it in. no, i can t say that it was. were you shaking? i had to locate where it was so when i called the deputies i could tell them where it was at. i drove halfway up the driveway, heard the honking and then i turned to the right and saw the tail lights flashing. that s when i knew that i had verified where the sound was coming from, but at that point, i didn t go to the car. i called the sheriff s office. they showed up. in the meantime you called the story household and ralph, your wife answered the call. tell me how this went down. that was great. you know, that dreaded phone call at 3:00, 4:00 in the morning and stacy laid there saying, oh, no, oh my god, oh, no. she never did say what had happened so when you re getting that call you just want to find out what the heck is going on, and finally she told us, she said, there s a bear out there in the car. and the police are here and beth is on the phone. so that s how the whole thing started and i went off to get to ben, his bedroom is right outside where the car was, very close, and we woke up ben, i jumped his case a little bit, asked him how his car was and had he locked it and things of has nature. right. ben i understood they wanted to take a pellet gun and shoot your window out. tell me how they got the bear out. that was their first thought, let s shoot the window out and maybe the bear will climb out the window, and you know, after much thought and they decided to tie a rope to the door, backed up and they unlocked it with the remote and just tugged on the rope and the door opened. the bear sat in the car for a little while and then he just walked out and ran into the woods. how is the car? american s view of first family is our own royalty. there s a particular buzz about chelsea, she was in the white house during a very difficult time in her parents marriage, everybody remembers the image of her walking to the helicopter holding her parents hands, after her father confessed his relationship with monica lewinsky and people thought how is this kid going to turn out and you know what? she seems to have turned out really well, exactly. two norwegian journalists were arrested thursday being around the reported area where the wedding is said to take place, a lot of high security, a limited guest list. is it fair to say this is not your typical celebrity wedding? there will be paparazzi. that s fair to say. former president bill clinton and secretary of state hillary rodman clinton travel with square, they have secret service so that s an added element and let s not also forget that chelsea herself is an international figure so no surprise that norwegian reporters were arrested, because chelsea traveled around the world with her parents, in fact, just last week as hillary rodman clinton was visiting vietnam the vietnamese presented hillary clinton with a gift for chelsea, a white tablecloth and also a mosaic portrait commemorating the visit that chelsea and hillary made to vietnam in 2000. how has hillary managed to stay so hands on with the wedding, as secretary of state, she was in vietnam, pakistan, afghanistan, south korea this week. how is she possibly juggling both? as she herself said the heavy travel schedule may testify to the fact she lacks a little common sense. we ve got e-mail and she s been looking at flower arrangements via e-mail and able to squeeze in dress selections and food tasting. she s a working mom, right, working moms know how to juggle. she s used to it. exactly. bill clinton would be surprised if chelsea gets down the aisle and he manages not to cry. they have a special relationship, bill and chelsea. they really do. they re very, very close. you know, when chelsea graduated from high school, bill gave the graduation speech and it was the most poignant, loving speech, he talked about how all the parents felt so wonderful and happy for their kids but what they really wanted to do is just go back to when their kids were toddlers and hold them and read them goodnight moon one more time. you can only imagine how he ll feel seeing his only daughter walk down the aisle. a few seconds left. 400 people invited to the wedding. do we know who may be on the list? before we get to that, i want to talk about folks who are going to take their animals by airplane this summer. yes. what they need to know. i think the most important thing to consider, it s pretty warm so you shouldn t plan to make air travel trips with your pet if it s very hot. if you have to, then you should make sure to plan a flight early in the morning or later in the evening. they can go into a carrier into the seat in front of you. they have to be under 20 pound. if they can t sit under the seat they can fly as baggage but you have to be on the flight with them. okay. that usually costs somewhere between $100 and $150 each way. if you re not on the flight with them, they can go as cargo, but in any of the cases it s really best to make sure that you plan a flight that is a non-stop flight to decrease the chance that your pet could be lost. a couple of other tips you have in mind? make sure you put something on the carrier, the crate, that clearly identifies which flight your pet is on, put their name on there, so whoever is helping to handle them really sort of files connected to them. i put my dog s name on there, make sure they know there is a live animal in there. bring a first aid kit, wipes, everything you think you might need to make sure your pet is safe and well taken care of and i.d. is really important. let s move down to our problem area here right now. in the car, you know, we see dogs in the window and in the passenger seat, flopping around the car. it s a danger to them and to you as well, right? it really is. it s just like with kids, you want to make sure they re safely secure, one of the most important things about car travel with your pets. you can get a little booster seat like this one which has a connector. it would go in there. you connect them, yes, or you can get a doggie seat belt so they re connected to the seat belt in the car but it s a harness. what do you think of that? you re not going to stay in there. i ll let you walk around. we get the idea. the important thing is not only keeps your pet safe but you, because you don t want them wandering around distracting you. other things to bring along? i think sometimes people forget you have to bring a good amount of food, enough for the entire trip. if you change the food on the trip your pet could get a tummy ache and don t want to deal with that at home and certainly on the road. bring toys. a lot of pets, even if they re well socialized traveling can be stressful. i have a dog that gets motion sick. the best thing to do, take lots of little trips to places you think your dog would like, for example to the dog park, most animals go in the car to go to the vet or groomer, so you could also use some of these things that are accommodative, the good behavior color from condition tent-eze, and vets best, great for travel. these might help. what s most important is getting your pet ready for travel at home before you take them on the road for a long time. andrea arden thanks very much. they re fine now. they can find companions if people come to animal haven shelter to adopt them. thanks. here s jenna. lester thanks. july is national women s motorcycle month, and there s plenty to celebrate. a recent study showed that one in ten motorcycle owners is a woman, and the number of female riders is increasing believe it or not at a higher rate than men so as a girl who is game for just about anything, i decided to hop on and find out what owl these fearless females we re talking about. remember the iconic motorcycle themes with elvis. keep in touch! reporter: popper, the fonz? men enjoying their rides. well today they re not the only ones two-wheeling down the road. women are now getting a leg up, riding high on their own. 25 million riders out there, almost 6 million are women. reporter: 6 million are women. yes. reporter: why are so many women gravitating towards a motorcycle? more women are seeing women on bikes and they see them and think oh, if she can do it, so can i. honestly there are no barriers to women getting into motorcycling. reporter: and not just one group of women, all women, wives, moms, even grandmothers. i have a 2-year-old and 7-year-old grandkid. reporter: how many of you guys are working, professional jobs now? it s the best way to start your day. you go to work and you re asleep in your car. you are not asleep here. reporter: how could you sleep? your eyes are always on the road, constantly aware of the world around you. it s part of what draws these women to the bike itself. for someone who has never been on a bike before tell me what the feeling is when you get on that bike and you take off and you let the rest of the world go. you re so in the moment, there s no future, there s no past, there s only that moment, and i come home so relaxed. this is happy hour. it s a natural way to feel better. reporter: these women aren t just joy riders. they know their way around a bike. if i point to places on this bike you ll know what they are? like what is this? the gas. reporter: what is this? coil thing? shock. reporter: i m shocked that you guys know as much as you do. i think a lot of people drive cars and don t know anything about their cars. you guys know so much about this bike. did you notice anything else about the group of all of us sitting here? we re all women. reporter: all women and as a proud member of that club i had to see what all of the fuss was about. i m a little nervous. i ve done a lot of thing but i ve never been on a motorcycle before. can we do this? let a s do it. reporter: all right! all right. reporter: where else would i begin than california s sunny pacific coast highway. that was great. when you re out there, you re very aware of everything around you, but at the same time, it s, i don t know, i don t have words, it s exhilarating. you re like in a zone. reporter: a zone many of these women can t live without. motorcycling to me is like my therapy. you re not thinking about what you re doing at work. it s just a great way to kind of refresh after a hard day at work or a hard week in the office. it s a rush of everything, it s a rush of adrenalin and makes me happy. i love the freedom, the thrill. it s just a complete sense of relaxation i m as free as a bird now a lot of fun and thank you to the women for being patient with me. i was apprehensive getting on. you got bugs in your teeth. it s an old joke, how do you know a happy motorcycleist?
