year ago. made the second round. there was a lot of hope, coming into this season, for the wolverines. >> dan: they had a lot of their quis back and this is a team, a michigan team that is built on the ability to shoot the ball and they simply have not shot the ball well all season long and they don't really have the inside game to make up for that, so it's one of those teams where, when they "we have lost so many of our sons and daughters," says this woman just after she voted, "too many victims." politicians know peace and public order are a priority for voters. in fact, when the results are finally in, neither of the front-runners is likely to win outright. iraq's new government will be a complex coalition facing a very long list of things to fix. >> i want to build new infrastructure like the sewage disposal, the pipelines for healthy water supply. >> reporter: today's election may have got the ball rolling on iraq's reconstruction, but chances are there will be plenty left for next generation of voters. the polls are closed now. they closed at 5:00 local time and the ballot boxs have been collected out so vote counting can begin, but we're not likely to know the shape of iraq's new government for at least a week. russ in. >> mitchell: elizabeth palmer in baghdad, thank you very much. there is confusion tonight over the arrest this sunday of a member of al qaeda. the report out of pakistan has officials there and in washington looking for answers. bob orr is in our d.c. bureau tonight with the latest. bob, good evening. >> reporter: good evening, russ. for a while today, as you mentioned, it looked like major victory for u.s. intelligence with reports out of pakistan that adam gadahn had been captured. gadahn is the american face of al qaeda, an inside operative who is close to osama bin laden. the reported capture of gadahn came on the same day that al qaeda released his latest propaganda tape. sounding a call to arm, gadahn urged muslims to mount more attacks against u.s. targets. >> we should look for targets which epitomize western decadence, depravity, immorality and atheism. >> reporter: it's clear the tape is relatively new as gadahn hails the suicide bomber who killed seven c.i.a. agents in afghanistan in december and umar farouk abdulmutallab, the accused underwear bomber who tried to bring down mort west airlines flight 253 on christmas day. and he also praises accused fort hood shooter major nadal hassan. >> a pioneer, a trailblazer and a role model who has opened a door. >> reporter: just hours after the tape appeared, multiple pakistani sources said they had closed the door on gadahn himself, arresting him along with two other militants in a karachi neighborhood, but u.s. officials expressed doubts, saying they were unable to confirm the arrest of the california man originally known as adam perlman. and then late today a key pakistani official said the man in custody is not gadahn but another man, a low-ranking american with a similar name. now, obviously u.s. officials would love to grab gadahn because he could provide a wealth of intelligence and even possibly lead them to top al qaeda leaders. and he's also the highest-ranking american inside al qaeda. his arrest would be symbolically very important. meanwhile, pakistani forces continue to round up taliban and al qaeda suspects at an unprecedented pace. russ? >> mitchell: bob orr in our washington bureau, thanks a lot. we'll be back. the world of orange fiber sports news for you today. top-ranked lady uconn huskies tied their own record for most consecutive wins in women's college basketball. the lady huskies are a strong team, but it turns out playing any team sports helps all girls do better in life as we hear from michelle miller. >> reporter: in the world of college basketball, there is nothing else like them. >> the uconn huskies have done it again. >> reporter: no other team, male or female, can boast a 70-game winning stem-cell research, each win by double-digits. >> we always say the star of our team is our team. >> he is geno auriemma, the no-nonsense, hard-driving coach of the university of connecticut lady huskies. for the last 25 seasons. >> i don't think people appreciate how hard it is to be on team where you're so dependent among other people for your own success. >> he doesn't just prepare you for the game of basketball. it's a game of life. >> reporter: it's a team with a perfect 100% graduate rate in the 2008/2009 season, compare that with only 33% of the men in uconn's program. maya moore voted espn academic all-american with a 3.75 grade point average. >> i'm just trying to continue to be a pioneer. >> reporter: such feats may not have been possible for the lady huskies if not for the passage of title 9. the federal mandate forced schools and colleges to even the playing field by offering girls the same sports opportunities as boys, and it's paid big dividends. when the bill passed in 1972, only one out of 25 girls played high school sports. today it's one in three. >> people who participate in high school sports get more education and earn higher wages later in life. >> reporter: a study released last month show girls who play team sports in high school are 20% more likely to graduate, half as likely to become pregnant in high school and 20% more likely to go on the college. but there is still some catching up to do. while only one-third of girls play sports in high school, half of all boys do. and unlike women athletes in individual sports who become household names, these star players don't get the star treatment or the money and endorsements that go with it. >> now tina's the number-one pick. she's going to get, what, like pair of nikes, you know, and a little bit of money. >> reporter: the top salary for a wnba player is 95,000. >> we don't want to let it get us down, so we keep succeeding and keep representing out on the court and in the classroom. >> reporter: for coach aurilia, that's a winning attitude. >> so put them up against lebron, it's shame. put them up against every other college guy, they got it made. >> reporter: now the only lesson left for him to teach his athletes is how to lose. michelle miller, cbs news, storrs, connecticut. >> mitchell: that is all for this abbreviated edition of the "cbs evening news." i'm russ mitchell. katie is here tomorrow. good night.
