Women's Relay Qualifies for NCAA Championships

AUBURN, Ala. – Members of the Florida State women’s swimming and diving team will be headed to the NCAA Championships in March after swimming and automatic qualifying time in the 200 medley relay at the Auburn Invite on Friday. The team of Tania Quaglieri, Nina Kucheran, Jenny Halden and Rebecca Moynihan touched first behind a season best of 1:36.37, just under the NCAA ‘A’ cut (1:36.40). “We’re really excited about what we saw today,” FSU head coach Neal Studd said. “Of course our women’s 200 medley relay was amazing. It was awesome to get that NCAA cut done. We also had some other great performances.” The No.19/RV Seminoles competed in two finals only sessions on Friday and will race again on Saturday at 11 a.m., at the James E. Martin Aquatics Center. In the evening, Ginevra Molino was the runner-up in the 400 IM, touching at 4:20.88 ahead of Sydney Cole in fourth at 4:30.24. Halden added a silver medal in the 100 fly, swimming a season-best and NCAA consideration time of 52.67.  Aryanna Fernandes followed in fourth place at 53.27. Brooke Arnold led the Noles in the 200 free, placing 11th with a time of 1:50.10 ahead of Ashley Zettle (1:50.69) in 15th and Oliva Sapio (1:51.37) in 16th. Rachel Moran followed by placing 11th in the 100 breast (1:04.73) and Nora Woods (1:05.50) in 13th. Maddie McDonald closed the session by grabbing bronze in the 100 back, touching at 54.34 The men’s team started off by placing second in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:28.79 behind Tyler Hanley, Jason Martindale, Domen Demsar and Jokubas Keblys. Auben Nugent swam a personal best in the 400 IM, placing eighth and Brennan Hammond followed with another eighth place showing in the 100 fly at 48.02, which was his best time. “I’d really like to highlight Auben Nugent,” Studd added. “He swam all best times including a nine second drop in the 400 IM. That was epic.” FSU was led by Tre’V Monroe in the 200 free, who placed 10th at 1:38.54 behind a career best, followed by Jackson Seith taking seventh in the 100 breast (54.62). Hanley closed the night out by placing fifth in the 100 back at 49.18. In the first session of the day, the Seminoles started off with a victory in the women’s 200 free relay behind Moynihan, Halden, Fernandes and McDonald with a time of 1:29.90. Arnold led the way for FSU in the 500 free, touching in seventh place with a time of 4:57.52 ahead of Zettle (4:58.17) in eighth and Ella Dyjak in 10th (5:01.43). Sapio turned in the top time for the Noles in the 200 IM, touching 10th at 2:04.24 ahead of Ginevra Molino (2:04.65) in 12th and Rachel Moran in the 13th (2:05.33). Moynihan added a fifth place finish in the 50 free, touching at 22.60. Gloria Muzito also raced in the 50 free, placing 12th at 23.34. The men’s team started off the session with a second place finish in the 200 free relay. The team of Ian Lauritzen, Keblys, Tiago Pereira and Demsar clocked a 1:20.35, which was just shy of the win (1:19.72). Jason Brzozowski (4:31.37) and Cam Taddonio (4:31.54) touched in 15th and 16th place respectively in the 500 free. Nugent turned in a career best in the 200 IM, touching at 1:48.28 in the 200 IM for fourth place. Demsar swam the fastest time for FSU in the 50 free, touching at 20.22 for seventh place ahead of Keblys (20.39) in 10th, Adrian Aguilar in 11th (20.41), Dominic Miller in 13th (20.47), Pereira in 14th (20.49) and Lauritzen (20.54) in 15th.
