February 4, 2021
Actor Taapsee Pannu has reacted to the argument put forward by several Indian celebrities including a few Bollywood actors that Rihanna’s tweet in support of farmers’ agitation was an attack on India’s sovereignty.
In a sharp reaction, the
Pink actor said, “If one tweet rattles your unity, one joke rattles your faith or one show rattles your religious belief then it’s you who has to work on strengthening your value system not become ‘propaganda teacher’ for others.”
The outspoken actor found plenty of support for her stand on the issue as one fan wrote, “Covering up gross human rights violations as an ‘internal matter’ is like saying domestic violence is a family matter.” Another commented, “Love you. At least you as Punjabi stood for us rather than a sold-out virat kohli. Waheguru chardi kala ch rakhe.” ....

Indian American Community Holds Vigil in Davis, California, After Gandhi Statue Destroyed by Vandals

Davis Deputy Police Chief Paul Doroshov told
India-West that the vandalism occurred on Jan. 26 night — Republic Day — during a heavy storm in which most of the university town was out of power. The vandals sawed off the feet, which toppled the statue — a $22,000 bronze gifted by the Indian government and erected in 2016 — and then sawed off half the head.
City workers arriving at the scene the following morning found the statue on the ground.
Doroshov said the destroyed statue is now with the Davis Police Department, and is being held as evidence. “This is an active investigation. We don’t know who did this or why, but we are taking it very seriously and following up on all leads,” he said, adding that the incident constitutes felony vandalism. ....
