NCR, CAR register highest Covid-19 vax coverage: DOH

(PNA photo by Joey Razon) MANILA - The National Capital Region (NCR), the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) and most regions in Luzon have registered the highest number of fully vaccinated and boosted individuals against the coronavirus, a health official said Tuesday. Data from the Department of Health (DOH) National Covid-19 Vaccination Dashboard on March 30 showed that a total of 23,613,578 doses have been administered in the NCR while 2,068,901 doses were given in the CAR. "Habang nananatili nasa pinakamababa ang Region 12 at BARMM [Bangsamoro Administrative Region in Muslim Mindanao] patuloy po ang DOH sa paglulunsad ng special vaccination days para mapataas pa natin ang (Vaccination coverage remains very low in Region 12 (Soccsksargen) and the BARMM) vaccination rate," Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said in an online media forum. Some 6,085,003 doses have been administered in Region 1; Region 2, 4,081,917; Region 3, 14,413,591; Calabarzon, 17,333,665; Mimaropa, 2,642,139; and Bicol Region, 5,059,314. The BARMM has administered 1,467,157 doses while Region 12 has 3,823,094. As of April 11, more than 66.7 million Filipinos are fully vaccinated against Covid-19 while 71.9 million have received their first dose. Vergeire urged the 47.8 million eligible individuals to join the 12.5 million fully vaccinated who have received their booster shots. About 1.3 million are fully vaccinated among the pediatric population while 9 million adolescents have completed their primary series doses. (PNA) }

4th 'Bakunahan' drive targets 1.8-M vaccinees

(PNA photo by Jess Escaros, Jr.) MANILA - The government is aiming to vaccinate against the coronavirus 1.8 million individuals in the fourth "Bayanihan, Bakunahan" drive, a health official said. In a message to reporters Tuesday night, Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said the upcoming national vaccination drive (NVD) from March 10 to 12 is "contextualized" in consideration of areas with low vaccination rates and coverage. "Further, individuals due for second doses, the remaining senior citizen population (A2), as well as adolescents are among those set to be prioritized in the upcoming NVD4," she said. She added that the Department of Health is working with the Department of Labor and Employment and the Civil Service Commission to cover and excuse employees from being absent if they are scheduled to get vaccinated on March 10 to 12. In response to the statement of presidential candidate Dr. Jose Montemayor that Covid-19 vaccines can only produce artificial immunity for three months, Vergeire said the DOH reiterated that inoculation, combined with strict adherence to the minimum public health standards, still provides maximum protection against the coronavirus. The DOH earlier said all Covid-19 jabs provided with emergency use authorization by the Philippine Food and Drug Administration have undergone research and testing and have been proven to be safe and effective for public use. On the administration of the booster shots for individuals who are eligible to receive it, Vergeire said the primary series of vaccines have waning effectiveness over time. "According to studies, bodies hit a 'ceiling of immunity' after the third dose (booster shot). This increases the antibodies' ability to block the Omicron from infecting cells," she said. Meantime, individuals who are not part of the high-risk groups reach an upper limit for their antibodies after receiving a booster shot. Health experts worldwide have repeatedly said that vaccinated and boosted individuals, especially those with comorbidities, have protection against severe Covid-19 and from getting hospitalized. To date, a total of 137,085,697 Covid-19 vaccine doses have been administered nationwide. Some 69,229,939 individuals were given the first dose of the vaccine; 63,793,957 are fully vaccinated and 10,616,590 have received booster shots. (PNA) }

Drop in Covid-19 numbers due to protocols, high vax rate: Duque

(PNA photo by Joey Razon) MANILA - The country's lower coronavirus figures could be attributed to Filipinos' adherence to the minimum public health standards and the high vaccination rate, Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said. In his presentation to President Rodrigo Duterte Monday night, Duque reported a 31 percent decrease in the daily average cases for the week of March 1 to 7 at 899 infections compared to the previous week - February 22 to 28 - at 1,306 infections. "One differentiator compared to many of these countries, I should like to believe, is our very good compliance to minimum public health standards, 'yung masking ng mga Pilipino (the wearing of masks of Filipinos)," Duque said. He added that countries with high vaccination coverage rates "just threw caution to the wind" while Filipinos are disciplined in terms of compliance to the minimum public health standards - physical distancing, hand hygiene, and all other non-pharmaceutical interventions. This, he noted, is evident in the country's low mortality rate at 1.5 percent which is much lower than the global average of about 2.04 percent. The country logged 6,207 new cases for the recent week. Of the total number, 1,479 came from the National Capital Region; 836 from Calabarzon; and 776 from Western Visayas. Three severe and critical cases were added to the tally and 615 verified deaths were recorded for the recent week. "Ang current cumulative case fatality rate ay nasa 1.56 percent, mababa po kumpara sa (The current cumulative case fatality rate is 1.56 percent, lower compared to the) global fatality rate of 2.04 percent," Duque said. Meantime, the tally of recovered cases for the recent week reached 9,954. The country's current cumulative recovery rate is 98.7 percent. The healthcare utilization rate nationwide also showed a downtrend in the recent week. About 18 percent of the non-intensive care unit (ICU) beds are utilized while 26 percent of the ICU beds are utilized. Out of the 6,572 total admissions at the national level, only 16.1 percent are identified as severe and critical. When asked about the reason behind the decline in cases, Duque told Duterte the country has two sources of protection - vaccination and natural immunity. To date, a total of 137,085,697 Covid-19 vaccine doses have been administered nationwide. Some 69,229,939 individuals were given the first dose of the vaccine; 63,793,957 are fully vaccinated; and 10,616,590 have received booster shots. Duque said the Philippines experienced an early spike in cases before these numbers went down as compared to other countries in the region. "This is the fifth straight day that we have reported below 1,000 cases per day. So, the next reason, Mr. President, is the protection from natural infection, natural immunity," he said. The country had five surges since the pandemic started. The recent surge due to the Omicron variant infected many with only mild symptoms, and some no symptoms at all, accounting to 92 to 94 percent of the overall case tally. The country's vaccination figures also show that about 70.76 percent of the target population has been vaccinated against the coronavirus. As of March 6, Department of Health data showed that 63,690,701 individuals are fully vaccinated while 10,554,093 people have received their booster shots. (PNA) }
