When Oscars are handed out, it’s possible best picture, director, writing and all four acting wins will be for films about real people.

The sound design of “Minari” and “Sound of Metal,” the cinematography of “Nomadland” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” the production design of “One Night in Miami” and “The Father,” to name just a few, are admirable on the small-screen, but the nuances would be even more effective in a theater.

Facebook has launched We the Culture, a new content initiative created and managed by a team of Black employees that is investing in and amplifying content from Black creators.
More from Variety
The initiative also incorporates programming for Facebook Watch through partnerships with production companies focused on Black creatives, and among the first shows are “Chop It Up” with Storm Reid, “Asking for a Friend” with Vanessa Simmons, and “Mastery of Comedy” with Angela Yee.
We the Culture grew out of Facebook’s announcement last summer — following the murder of George Floyd — that it would invest $200 million to support Black-owned businesses and organizations, including $25 million earmarked for Black content creators.

"zero gravity" and "12 years a slave." that got nine nominations. and some big snubs. also joining us is christy smith, cnn entertainment commentator. she's at the sundance film festival in utah. in terms of the snubs, what surprised you the most? oprah got a lot of headlines, tom hanks, as well. >> i would be remiss standing here in park city at the launch of the sundance film festival if i didn't talk about robert redford. he was a front runner going in, since "all is lost" premiered. everybody had redford as a lock. i was really shocked that he didn't get the nom, and everybody up here has been talking about it all day.

just the way it is. just the same way. >> i don't know what you are talking about. >> you know what i'm talking about. >> we shouldn't do any of it. now i support richie. he has vision. don't do it. >>. ♪ some say john -- ♪ but i say john was a preacher and my bible says -- ♪ ♪ ♪ >> that final clip there, 12 years a slave. i will be talking live with the director in a matter of minutes. but the man's face you saw in the film, well, we have a personal section there.

holiday by volunteering at a washington, d.c., kitchen that prepares meals for needy people. it was five years ago today that barack obama was sworn in as the 44th president to take the oath of office. over the course of his presidency he has often shied away from talking about race, but in a revealing interview he acknowledges there are people who dislike him because he is african-american. we'll talk more about it with the screen writer of "12 years a slave." he spoke about race in a way he hasn't spoken many about. he said, there's no doubt some folks who dislike me because they don't like the idea of a black president. he said there's some people who like him because he's an african-american president. >> that's a formulation he's very careful to make. the second part as much as the first part. i don't know that the second part is as much in evidence any
