Tom Kacich | Fewer polling places for the upcoming consolidated elections

Instead of the 86 polling places that were used in Champaign County for the November general election, Clerk Aaron Ammons has cut the number nearly in half for the April 6 consolidated election where voters will chose municipal, school district and other local offices.
Consolidated elections typically draw fewer voters than fall elections and state law allows election authorities to “cluster” polling places in such elections. It will save the county an estimated $52,000 (for both the Feb. 23 primary and the April vote) and potentially expose fewer election judges to the coronavirus, Ammons said.
While more than 96,000 people voted in the Nov. 6 general election, the 2017 consolidated election attracted just 26,865 voters. There were even fewer in 2019: 17,266.

Dispute over filling county board vacancy continuing even after swearing-in

URBANA — A day after she tried twice to block the Champaign County Board from filling a vacant seat, county Executive Darlene Kloeppel said Friday that she was preparing a written veto of the board’s vote to approve its newest member, Cameron Raab of Champaign.
Kloeppel said she told the board Thursday evening that she was vetoing its unanimous vote approving Raab to fill the District 6 seat vacated by Mike Ingram, who resigned after being elected recorder of deeds in November.
Kloeppel’s oral veto was ultimately ignored.
State’s Attorney Julia Rietz warned Kloeppel that her action could be viewed as contemptuous of a court order issued earlier in the day. County Clerk Aaron Ammons swore Raab in, and he was seated for the Thursday night board meeting.

Judge orders Urbana to release all police reports in Ammons investigation

URBANA — A Champaign County judge Wednesday ordered the city of Urbana to release police reports sought by a watchdog group under the Freedom of Information Act while scolding two government lawyers for withholding information from him.
Judge Jason Bohm said attorneys for the Illinois State Police and Illinois State Appellate Prosecutor’s office “certainly appear to have violated the spirit” of the code of professional conduct for lawyers by failing to give him information about the timing of an investigation, a key element in the city’s denial of the request for the reports.
The ruling came in a case filed March 6 by the Edgar County Watchdogs, who wanted to see Urbana police reports regarding a January incident involving state Rep. Carol Ammons at a resale shop in Urbana.
