Hill where the House Foreign Affairs committee is about to hear from secretary of state john kerry, jack lew, and earnest muniz. Last week the three secretaries were grilled before a senate committee. Libby casey is live on capitol hill. Libby, good morning, last weeks hearing did get testy at least at times. Are we expecting the same today . Stephanie we certainly are. The House Republicans intend to go over their own set of questions, and well hear tough questions from democrats too. It wasnt just last weeks hearings where senators used words like you have been bamboozled and fleeced. The rhetoric and conversation continued throughout the week. We heard ted cruz speaking on the floor last week calling for an amendment, saying that iran must recognize israel before congress can sign off on this deal. That sort of thing wont happen and he got a lot of pushback even ....

To take out the facilities and who has actually deployed that weapon, but iran has already mastered the fuel cycle. They have mastered the ability to produce significant stockpiles of fissile material and you cant bomb away that knowledge any more than you can sanction it away. I was chair of the committee when we a lot of us joined together and put most of the iran sanctions in place, and i know well as you do that the whole point was to bring iran to the negotiating table. Even the toughest sanctions previously did not stop irans program from growing from 1 163 to 300 to 5,000 to more than 19,000 now, and it didnt stop iran from accumulating a stockpile of enriched uranium. Now sanctions are not an end to themselves. They are a diplomatic tool that has enabled us to do what sanctions could not without the negotiation, and that is to reign in a Nuclear Program that was headed in a very dangerous direction and to shine a spot lig ....

Ultimately, yes. Ultimately they are the iran sanctions act itself. There is the lifting of sanctions. Ultimately they would have to vote. If we dont do that pursuant to the agreement are there any penalties on our part . We would have broken it, and all bets are off. Can a future president choose to abide by the president . Absolutely. A future president can but its our adjustment if this agreement is fully implemented and its working well no future president is going too choose to do that because of the implications. If this is working its achieving our goal of not having a weapon in iran. To be clear the actual repeal of sanctions would be way down the road. Its not something that happens in the year or two. Its many years in the future. Probably eight more years. I want to get to the troubling issue of inspections. Are you saying that there is no limit to inspections by the iaea that it will go on what im saying there is a process. Who pays for that . We pray a certain element of t ....

The iaea contradicted that and said while its true with some of the larger scale operations some things such as manufacturing uranium components and triggers could be covered up in the 24 days. Im trying to get a clear answer on this issue because i think its one of the key components when trying to look at this in an intellectually honest way to see if we have a verifiable deal. Ive spoken with mr. Hinanen. Hes up the river at harvard these days, but the issue i want to emphasize and what ive always said is that work with Nuclear Materials we have very very high confidence in terms of finding microscopic amount there is. When go to things like triggers, things that do not involve Nuclear Materials but are important for a Nuclear Explosive that gets into a higher stage of requirement. In a classified environment ....

CSPAN2 Key Capitol Hill Hearings June 22, 2024

Come to order. I want to thank the witnesses for being here today. And we look forward to a fulsome hearing. I want to thank those, also in attendance. I know there was a little bit of an outbreak prior to us convene convening. We thank you for being here. We do hope youll respect that now the meetings in order. Outbursts of any kind are unwarranted and will respect the democratic process that is taking place here. So, again, we thank you for beg being here. We also thank you for your courtesy as we move ahead. I know the witnesses have agreed to be here as long as we wish. So well start with sevenminute questions. I do know based on last nights presentation, theres sometimes a tendency for witnesses to want to interject. And what i would say is, obviously we conduct our meetings with a lot of respect and courtesy. And i would just ask the witnesses if they would to respond directly to the question from senators on both sides of the aisle as if they ask when you ask it directly to a wi ....
