Mouse plague: Rural NSW to receive much-needed relief from mouse plague, pending approval from Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority.

Regional areas in NSW badly affected by the mouse plague will soon receive some relief, as the state government prepares to roll out 20 grain treatment sites.
Pending approval from the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) for the use of bromadiolone around crops, the sites will use perimeter baiting in combination with zinc phosphide.
Bromadiolone is a rodenticide that has been specially manufactured to kill rats and mice.

‘Pile your plate’ with local seafood
A grassroots-driven campaign to put NSW seafood on more plates in more restaurants and at more events has been unveiled by the State Government and Industry today.
The NSW Government will deliver $500,000 in grants, under the Eat More NSW Seafood 2021 program, for industry stakeholders to promote their fresh, local produce.
Minister for Agriculture Adam Marshall said after industry was impacted the recent floods it was now more important than ever to buy local seafood and this program would put NSW produce front and centre for both businesses and customers.
“Our produce is world-class, so today we have launched a campaign to support local businesses and see plates piled with fish, oysters, mussels and more caught from NSW waters,” Mr Marshall said.

$50 million support package to help regional communities combat mice plague
The NSW Government has today announced a $50 million package to offer farmers, households and small businesses assistance to battle the mice plague currently impacting parts of rural and regional NSW.
Deputy Premier John Barilaro and Minister for Agriculture Adam Marshall said free baiting, through free-of-charge grain treatment, would be made available to primary producers, while affected rural and town households and small businesses would be able to apply for rebates to help them meet the cost of purchasing mouse baits.
“We know the financial pressure this mice plague is putting on farmers and household budgets, we have heard the concerns of regional NSW and we are acting on it,” Mr Barilaro said.

Expansion of popular mice workshops for farmers & new biological control research

Date Time
Expansion of popular mice workshops for farmers & new biological control research
Minister for Agriculture Adam Marshall has today announced a new series of mice management workshops for farmers contending with mice plague activity across parts of the State.
Mr Marshall said the series of 16 extra workshops followed nine earlier events which were fully subscribed and very well received by producers, looking to strengthen their on-farm mice management programs.
“It is critical farmers have access to the best tools and information to manage mice and that’s exactly what we’re giving them,” Mr Marshall said.
“To help achieve this, we have secured Australia’s leading mice expert, Steve Henry from the CSRIO, to provide in person advice to landholders. Steve is a powerful asset in our arsenal who has been researching mice for over 25 years.

MIL-OSI Australia: Hotel quarantine costs halved for overseas agricultural workers

7 Apr 2021
Joint media release: NSW Treasurer and Minister for Agriculture and Western NSW
With the State’s primary industries sector hard-hit by COVID-induced workforce shortages, the NSW Government has today announced a significant boost for farmers by subsidising half the quarantine costs for overseas agricultural workers.
NSW Treasurer Dominic Perrottet and Minister for Agriculture Adam Marshall announced the subsidy at the iconic Sydney Royal Easter Show today, saying labour shortages in the agricultural sector remained at critical levels.
“We know that our primary producers rely on seasonal and foreign workers, but we have heard loud and clear that the cost of mandatory quarantine is a significant barrier for farming businesses wanting to employ overseas workers,” Mr Marshall said.
