Rescue efforts continue for a missing Indonesian submarine with 53 crew aboard, believed sunk in deep water about 60 miles north of Bali.
Naval authorities said the sub's oxygen would be depleted by Saturday. The extreme depth may make recovery impossible, authorities said.
The KRI Nanggala-402 sub is thought to be 2,000 to 2,300 feet deep, which threatens to crush the vessel. Ahn Guk-hyeon, an official from South Korea’s Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering, told The Associated Press that the collapse depth for the submarine was 200 meters (656 feet) when Daewoo refitted the vessel's internal structures and systems in 2009-2012.

AKARTA, Indonesia -- Indonesian navy ships searched Thursday for a submarine that likely sank too deep to retrieve, making survival chances for the 53 people on board slim. Authorities said oxygen in the submarine would run out by early Saturday.
The diesel-powered KRI Nanggala 402 was participating in a training exercise Wednesday when it missed a scheduled reporting call. Officials reported an oil slick and the smell of diesel fuel near the starting position of its last dive, about 96 kilometers (60 miles) north of the resort island of Bali, though there was no conclusive evidence that they were linked to the submarine.

Indonesian navy ships searched Thursday for a submarine that went missing during training in the Indian Ocean. Officials said 53 crew members were on the boat when it disappeared Wednesday about 96 kilometers north of the island of Bali.
The navy believes the submarine may have sunk too low in the sea for its control systems to operate. The deeper the submarine sinks, the harder it will be to rescue. Officials estimated the sub’s oxygen supply would run out early Saturday.

He said rescuers found an unidentified object with high magnetism in the area and that officials hope it’s the submarine.
The navy believes the submarine sank to a depth of 600-700 meters (2,000-2,300 feet) — much deeper than its collapse depth estimated at 200 meters (656 feet) by a firm that refitted the vessel in 2009-2012.
Ahn Guk-hyeon, an official from South Korea’s Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering, said the submarine would collapse if it goes deeper than around 200 meters because of pressure. He said his company upgraded much of the Indonesian submarine’s internal structures and systems but it lacks latest information about the vessel.
