Some tech bosses and political leaders have warned the rapid development of AI poses an existential threat to the world, sparking a race by governments and international institutions to design safeguards and regulation for the future.

The new effort will be under the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and lead the US government's efforts on AI safety, especially for reviewing advanced AI models.

The UK government will welcome foreign political leaders, tech industry figures, academics and others this week for a two-day summit billed as the first of its kind on artificial intelligence (AI). Sunak and other leaders have increasingly joined the industry itself in arguing current knowledge and regulation of frontier AI is likely insufficient for the challenges it will pose.

The order will also seek to protect against the risk of AI being used to develop dangerous biological materials, and stop it from being used to defraud consumers.
