Frost Frames: Cinematic Chronicle of Kashmir's Winter Business

In the enthralling narrative, "Behind the Frostbitten Frames," Aiman Fayaz, a tenacious 21-year-old intern at Kashmir Life, recounts the challenges faced while producing a mini-web series on Kashmir's winter business. Assigned to capture the essence of Chilla-ie-Kalan, Aiman initially grappled with setbacks, including the withdrawal of the cameraperson and a series of unexpected challenges during shoots. Undeterred, Aiman navigated the complexities independently, eventually partnering with Umer Dar, showcasing resilience and maturity. The series delves into the lives of winter business proprietors, unraveling stories from the Shehr-e-Khas of Srinagar, where seasoned artisans share profound narratives. Despite camera aversions and unforeseen obstacles, Aiman's commitment to the project remains steadfast, yielding a poignant exploration of Kashmir's winter economy. The narrative extends beyond fieldwork, revealing internal struggles and triumphs, highlighting Aiman's growth in a newsroom where age initially undermined credibility. The series, reduced to eight episodes due to resource constraints, offers a comprehensive insight into the impact of an unusually dry winter on Kashmir's economy.

Circa 2020. After being shut for months, surviving as they were on dollops of vanilla journalism, newsrooms were getting back to what they ought to be; buzzing with activity. The newspapers were trying to revive, retrieve, and reconnect with the realities on the ground. The communication blockade had taken a toll not only on the readers – they were denied off their daily dose of news – but the journalists as well. The reporters had relocated, gone cold on their beat as their professional bread and butter has become a scarce commodity. The managements faced falling revenues resulting in holding back, cutting salaries to laying off people. The squeeze on journalists’ lives and livelihood was pincer-like.

For fifty years beginning 1931, Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah ruled the politics of Jammu and Kashmir, both from within and outside of jail as well as within and outside of power. One of the most enigmatic politicians of his time, he was accused of having conflicting views on issues depending on the time and place he was positioned in. He was loved and hated in equal measure by his admirers and adversaries. His politics was known to be pro-India and anti-India at the same time. A considerable period of his political career, over a decade, was spent in jail which he blamed on New Delhi for misunderstanding him. Architect of the constitutional autonomy of Jammu and Kashmir within the framework of the Indian Constitution—the status diluted over the decades and finally scrapped on 5 August 2019 through a Presidential order—Abdullah was a strong opponent of Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s Two-Nation Theory and Jammu and Kashmir joining Pakistan in 1947. Yet, his adversaries within India refused to see in him a pro-India politician. Recently, there have been some overt efforts to, what his supporters feel, dislodge him from the history of Kashmir by withdrawing the annual public holiday on account of his birthday and renaming a police gallantry award named after him.
