Alex Eala bows out of Manacor tilt

Published January 29, 2021, 8:09 PM
Alex Eala’s fairytale run at the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Women’s World Tennis Tour ended Friday night after yielding to a more experienced player in the quarterfinals of the W15 Manacor in Spain.
The 15-year-old PH junior player succumbed to seventh seed Ylena In-Albon of Switzerland, 6-0, 6-3, after a seven-match run that saw her winning her first pro title in the first leg last weekend.
Eala struggled with her erratic plays, but briefly gained composure in the second set where she won three straight games to crawl back from a 3-0 hole.
But the 21-year-old In-Albon, who is ranked No. 432 in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), quickly bounced back to claim the next three games en route to the win.

Rising junior player Alex Eala continued to make heads turn in the International Tennis Federation (ITF) World Tennis Tour after stunning her seeded rival in the second leg of the W15 Manacor event in Spain late Wednesday.
Three days after capturing her first pro title, the 15-year-old PH bet shocked second seed Mirjam Bjorklund, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, in the opening round of the $15,000 tournament.
Eala needed more than two hours in beating her Swedish rival, who currently holds an ITF singles ranking of No. 250.
Entered as a junior reserve, Eala pulled away from 2-all in the deciding frame by winning the next two games, before dropping her serve in the seventh.

Teen wonder Alex Eala continued her rampage in the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Women’s World Tennis Tour after cruising into the quarterfinals of the W15 Manacor event in Spain Thursday night.
Still in cloud nine from her three-set upset victory over second seed Mirjam Bjorklund of Sweden in the opening round, the 15-year-old Eala wasted no time in disposing of Spaniard Alba Carrillo Marin, 6-2, 6-3, in this $15,000 tournament.
The PH bet banked on her strong baseline game, needing only one hour and 23 minutes to rule her 24-year-old opponent.
Down 2-1 in the second set, Eala rose to the challenge by dominating the next three games to take the 4-2 lead.

Eala, who entered the $15,000 event as a junior reserve, needed one hour and 20 minutes in stunning Mendez, who is ranked No. 2 in the International Tennis Federation.
The 15-year-old PH top junior player had trouble with her serve against Mendez after double faulting five times, but still managed to win five break points.
