Multicloud networking startup Aviatrix reportedly worth $700M+ after new funding

Multicloud networking startup Aviatrix reportedly worth $700M+ after new funding

Multicloud networking startup Aviatrix Systems Inc. Tuesday will announce it has closed a $75 million funding round led by General Catalyst, the company confirmed today.
The Series D funding comes at a valuation exceeding $700 million, The Information reported this morning.
General Catalyst is a Cambridge, Massachusetts-based venture capital firm with a track record of spotting promising startups. Its previous investments include Airbnb Inc. and Stripe Inc., which is reportedly preparing to raise funding at a more than $100 billion valuation.
Aviatrix provides a cloud networking platform that companies can use to orchestrate the flow of data in their multicloud environments. One of the startup’s products, called Aviatrix Transit, enables information technology teams to centrally manage networking across Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Corp.’s Azure and Google Cloud Platform, as well as on-premises. That centralized approach avoids the need to use different management tools for different clouds.

F5 Networks' acquisition of Volterra signals the rise of distributed clouds

SHARE
With this week’s $500 million acquisition by application delivery controller supplier F5 Networks Inc. of cloud-native network and security provider Volterra Inc., F5 aims to create an edge services platform for businesses and service providers to deliver and secure “cloud” apps at scale.
I put the term cloud in quotes because it’s the changing definition of cloud that drove this acquisition. As an industry, we’ve been talking about cloud for decades, but the reality is that cloud has gone through multiple evolutionary phases.
The first wave of cloud was hosted computing where organizations would run critical applications off their premises in a highly security environment, optimized for performance. Even once these infrastructure-as-a-service services came to market, most businesses took advantage of them by performing a “lift and shift” of legacy apps. That provided cost advantages, but the application performed essentially the same.
