DOH Bicol mounts vax drive as Covid-19 cases rise

DOH IN ACTION. An official of the Department of Health in Bicol urges students, parents, and teachers to get vaccinated against Covid-19 during the demand generation activity in this undated photo. The DOH also encouraged the fully vaccinated individuals to get booster shots. (Photo courtesy of DOH-5) LEGAZPI CITY - The Department of Health in Bicol (DOH-5) has conducted "demand generation activities" to encourage more residents to get vaccinated as the region logged increase of Covid-19 cases. Noemi Bron, DOH-Bicol Health and Promotion chief, said the activity is to inform the public on the importance of the Covid-19 vaccination. "For the month of June at least 11,997 individuals from different provinces in the region availed the vaccination, and the campaign will be sustained by the Local government units (LGUs)," Bron said in interview on Thursday. She said the demand generation activities were conducted in various schools in the municipalities that have low vaccination coverage for children aged 5 to 11 years old. "During the activities for the month of June, a total of 11,997 individuals were vaccinated - 2,208 individuals from Albay; Camarines Sur - 5,372; Camarines Norte - 471; and Masbate - 3,946," she added. She said the activity will be continued for the month of July with the DOH employees providing assistance. "With the increasing cases of Covid-19 in the Bicol Region, getting vaccinated and boosted is essential in being protected from severe and critical forms of Covid-19," DOH-5 said in an advisory. A total of 82 new cases were recorded from June 26 to July 2 or 161 percent increase from 32 cases recorded the previous week (June 19 to June 25). Of the 82 new cases logged in Bicol region, Sorsogon has 13 new cases, Camarines Sur - 17; Catanduanes - 13; Albay - 37, and Camarines Norte - 2. The region has so far recorded 401 active cases, 33 recoveries and six deaths. With the increasing number of Covid-19 cases, DOH Bicol urged the public to continue practicing health protocols such as wearing the best-fitted face masks, hand washing, hand sanitizing, social distancing, and ensuring airflow. The three (3) Cs - closed contact, closed spaces, and crowded places should also be avoided. Self-isolation and early consultation should also be observed once symptoms manifest. "On top of these personal practices, the importance of being vaccinated and receiving the required number of booster doses is emphasized. Vaccines are proven effective as shown by the low number of cases to no recorded cases in previous months. However, due to the waning immunity from vaccines, the DOH Bicol also urges the public who are due for booster doses to get their booster shots," DOH-5 said. (PNA) }

DTI-Cebu continues giving safety seal despite easing of protocols

SAFETY SEAL. DTI officials led by its Cebu director Rosa Mae Quinanola hands over safety seal certification to two branches of Isuzu in Cebu on Wednesday (March 2, 2022) at the DTI-Cebu provincial office. To ensure continuous observance of health protocols, the DTI-Cebu issued a total of 159 new certifications since May 2021 and 22 renewals approved since December 2021. (Photo courtesy of DTI-Cebu) CEBU CITY - As Cebu province is put under Alert Level 2, the Department of Trade and Industry continues to issue safety seal certification to establishments to ensure compliance with the minimum health protocols against coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19). DTI-Cebu provincial director Rosa Mae Quinanola said establishments need to continue with the protocols as they intend to operate under the lower quarantine restrictions near to the new normal. "The safety seal certification program is voluntary, which means that this is not a requirement for the business establishments to operate continuously. Although we are under Alert Level 2 classification of the IATF, we highly encourage them to boost the confidence of their target consumers," Quinanola said in a statement on Wednesday. Under Alert Level 2, establishments are allowed only up to 70-percent capacity of customers while wearing of face mask, physical distancing, hand-sanitizing, and disinfection are still required. DTI-Cebu, along with the DTI-7's Consumer Protection Division led by Ines Cajegas, awarded a certification each to the Isuzu Cebu and Isuzu Cebu South in a simple program at the DTI Cebu provincial office. Based on DTI records, there are a total of 159 new certifications issued since May 2021 and 33 renewal certifications approved since December 2021. According to the DTI-7, each safety seal has a validity of six months from the date of issuance. "After the said period, the concerned establishments may apply for a renewal, which shall be granted based on their continued compliance with the eligibility requirements," the DTI-Cebu statement said. Business establishments that applied for the certification include groceries, supermarkets, membership shopping clubs, convenience stores, construction supply, and hardware stores, logistics service providers (outlets), barbershops, salons, and service and repair shops. Legazpi bishop issues new guidelines for church activities

Bishop Joel Baylon of the Diocese of Legazpi (File photo) LEGAZPI CITY - Bishop Joel Baylon of the Diocese of Legazpi on Thursday issued an updated guideline on church activities as a measure to help prevent a surge of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19). Based on Diocesan Circular No. 2, Series of 2022, parishes must follow the 30-percent church capacity from the previous 50 percent. "We shall also observe very limited church activities. Children below 12 years old are not yet permitted inside the church. Hence, there will be no celebration of First Communion for now. Rather, they are advised to stay at home and join online church celebrations," the circular read. Baylon also said wake masses in residences and funeral parlors are not yet allowed and priests may instead administer a blessing or short prayer for the dead. No mass confirmations and weddings may also be held until May 15. Masses in malls and offices are allowed provided that the venue is an open space or outdoors. "While we have allowed the Saturday Eucharist of the Neo-Catechumenal Communities, we are, however, discouraging this at this time because of the ongoing surge of Covid-19 cases in the province. No regular confession and anointing of the sick and the dying. As an alternative, priests and relatives of the sick can pray the prayer for the sick during this pandemic," the circular added. Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration (PEA) chapels will not yet admit the faithful since they are closed and small spaces. Instead, the faithful are encouraged to pray and visit the big churches. Overnight youth formation activities and the like are not yet permitted. Also, face-to-face meetings in big groups are highly discouraged and instead encouraged to be done online. Baylon, in a message to the Philippine News Agency (PNA), said christenings are still allowed provided that a limited number of children and guests will be observed to avoid overcrowding. "The 30-percent capacity is for the masses, while for baptism, there will be a limit as to the number of children so that overcrowding will be prevented," he said. The prelate also reminded parishioners that they must strictly observe the health protocols such as wearing face masks at all times, including weddings and funerals, temperature checking before entering the church, hand sanitizing, and physical distancing. "We continue fervently praying the Oratio Imperata against Covid-19. May God, through the intercession of Our Lady of Salvation, protect us and keep us safe," the bishop said. (PNA) }

DSWD-7 validating list of new 4Ps beneficiaries

VERIFICATION. Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program beneficiaries attend a community assembly in Barangay Bitoon, Daanbantayan town in northern Cebu province in this undated photo. The Department of Social Welfare and Development in Region 7 is currently validating the list of new beneficiaries. (Photo courtesy of DSWD-7) CEBU CITY - The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) in Region 7 on Monday asked for the public's help to validate the more than 40,000 familiesthat are new beneficiaries of the state's conditional cash transfer program. In a statement, DSWD-7 Director Rebecca Geamala said 41,091 families have been added to the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps). "We encourage the public to validate the master list to ensure that only eligible households become part of the program. The validation process can be done either through a community assembly or a house-to-house visit of our staff," Geamala said. The validation and registration process are ongoing in different cities and towns in Central Visayas. The copies of the master list of potential 4Ps beneficiaries are posted in conspicuous spaces like village, city, and municipal halls for verification. "Furthermore, these potential 4Ps households are required to submit marriage certificate, birth certificate, school enrollment certificate, health enrollment certificate, valid identification card, or other alternate documents as part of the supporting documents during the registration," she added. The new beneficiaries must follow minimum health standards like wearing of face mask, hand sanitizing, and physical distancing during validation and registration. Geamala said Cebu province listed the highest number of new beneficiaries with 34,107, followed by Bohol with 6,956, and Negros Oriental with 27. There are currently 282,667 4Ps households in the Central Visayas region. As the 4Ps nationwide covers 4.4 million households, Geamala said DSWD continues to reach more poor households by replacing those who exited and are about to graduate from the program. The 4Ps National Advisory Council passed Resolution No. 43, institutionalizing the replacement policy of 4Ps households by those not covered by the program. (PNA) }
