Thousands of Niagara farm workers receive COVID-19 vaccine

In 2020, the three Mexican nationals working on farms in Ontario died in May and June after contracting COVID-19 here. All three men were under age 60.
A deputy chief coroner's review of their deaths includes 35 recommendations, calling on everything from improved access to health care to better communication between governments and agencies involved in bringing foreign workers to Canada each growing season.
Advocates concerned about coercion
Migrant worker advocates have expressed support for vaccinations, along with concerns around about the risk of coercion, language and workers having time to discuss the vaccine with health professionals.
"We have to ensure that workers aren't being coerced or compelled in this process," Chris Ramsaroop, an organizer with Justice for Migrant Workers, previously told CBC.

Christine Somerville couldn't help but celebrate when she found out she and other Niagara school employees will be able to get the COVID-19 vaccinate as soon as Saturday.
"I feel fabulous," the 52-year-old custodian said on Tuesday. "I was doing a happy dance around my home today."
Niagara's COVID-19 vaccination task force said Tuesday that it will give shots to elementary and secondary school workers. The team cited risk factors that include the disruption of in-person learning, and the need to continue programs such as school meals to mental health supports.

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. — A representative for the Niagara Region says an investigation has started into a St. Catharines, Ont., barbershop that reopened during the COVID-19 lockdown as a film production studio.
Chrome Artistic Barbering recently started booking "auditions" at its barbershop for a series called "A Bit Off the Top," telling clients they would receive a haircut "while candidly discussing life" in front of rolling cameras.
