Young Activists Protest In Newark: 'We Want Counselors, Not Cops'

NEWARK, NJ Ma Khia Bryant. Adam Toledo. Anthony J. Thompson. Daunte Wright. These are some of the Black and Brown youth whose deaths inspired an outcry for counselors not cops in Newark this week.
On Thursday, a coalition of young activists and their supporters rallied near Lincoln Park, demanding more funding for bold and transformative investment in supportive services at their schools instead of more police.
The group included youth leaders with Make the Road New Jersey, advocates from Salvation and Social Justice, local high school students and their families. ....

Carjackings Down In Chicago, But Shootings And Murders Are Up

First, the good news out of Chicago: carjackings are down by more than 50% in the city compared to January of this year. Unfortunately, that’s about the
only good news when it comes to crime in the Second City, because in almost every other category, things are getting worse. Much worse, in fact.
Statistics included in a news release from the Chicago Police Department reveal that a troubling rise in gun violence this year shows little sign of slowing down. The city had five fewer homicides this April than last April, but the number of shooting victims increased to 299 from 225. ....

Cable news programming suggestion: Instead of filling every broadcast with the latest presumptive police outrage, try covering the latest drive-by killings. Show us more of whatâs really happening on the streets where we live. Newspapers and local TV are already on it.
For example, the morning after police released video of the fatal shooting of 13-year-old Adam Toledo by a Chicago cop, the lead headline in the Chicago Sun-Times read, âGirl, 7, fatally shot at McDonaldâs drive-thru.â
Witnesses told reporters they were astonished by the brazenness of the gang members who opened fire on a rival in front of many onlookers and several security cameras. The little girl seemingly got in the way. ....
