Shooting highlights lack of body cams among Portland police

Associated Press/Report for America
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Two police officers raised their weapons while sheltering behind a tree in a Portland park. They yelled at a homeless man to put up his hands. Moments later, two shots rang out. The man collapsed onto the grassy field.
A replica gun with an orange tip was found at the scene on April 16. But some key details are unclear, including whether the fake weapon was in Robert Delgado’s possession during the deadly encounter, or if he pointed it at officers.
Police have been tight-lipped, citing an ongoing investigation, and the only video from the scene — 11 minutes of footage taken by bystanders, not officers — shows just a portion of what happened.

BSU and NAACP reflect on the Derek Chauvin trial

Card image cap

The announcement on April 20 of Derek Chauvin’s guilty verdict for the murder of George Floyd was believed by many to be a step in the right direction.
Members of Southeastern’s chapters of the NAACP and Black Student Union have shared their thoughts on not only the guilty verdict, but what people can do moving forward. While this verdict showed that accountability can be achieved, the same cannot be said for many other similar cases.
NAACP member and freshman computer science major Irvin Ussin took some time to discuss his reaction to the verdict.
“I was glad that we were able to get some accountability, but there is still work to be done,” said Ussin.

Police and State Violence Have Secondary Impacts: Complex and Lasting Trauma

These last weeks, months, years and decades we keep on adding names to the list — Adam Toledo, Daunte Wright, Ma’Khia Bryant, Ronald Johnson, Pierre Loury, Rekia Boyd, Nickolas Lee, Laquan McDonald, Archie Lee Chambers, Maurice Granton, Anthony Alvarez.… The list of victims of police murder seems never-ending. Then there is the list of police torture survivors — Gerald Reed, Stanley Howard, Tony Anderson, Darrell Fair, Sean Tyler, Kilroy Watkins, and on and on and on. Many of us speak these names. We show up at the rallies and actions demanding justice. We work tirelessly to dismantle the long-serving systems and structures that brutalize and kill Black and Brown bodies. We feel the anger and the terror. But, we don’t often acknowledge that behind every name, every video, every individual locked up in the United States, every police stop, immense and complex trauma is left behind.

'NBC Nightly News' omits juror controversy while reporting on Chauvin defense lawyer's motion for new trial

Card image cap

Former Prosecutor Mark Eiglarsh weighs in on a photo of Derek Chauvin juror Brandon Mitchell wearing a BLM T-shirt.
"NBC Nightly News" omitted a key detail on Tuesday evening in the latest developments of the Derek Chauvin trial.
Defense attorney Eric Nelson, who represented the ex-Minneapolis police officer in the murder trial following the death of George Floyd, filed a motion seeking a new trial.
"The cumulative effect of the multiple errors in these proceedings deprived Mr. Chauvin of a fair trial, in violation of his constitutional rights," the filing reads.
Among the "errors" Nelson cited was the revelation of one of the jurors, Brandon Mitchell, who was photographed last summer at a Washington, D.C., BLM rally wearing a T-shirt that said "Get your knee off our neck" – a reference to Floyd's death after Chauvin knelt on his neck for more than nine minutes on video.

Ohio Democrats plan bill to allow police officers to be sued

COLUMBUS — Ohio House Democrats are preparing legislation that would allow law enforcement officers to be sued and would require them to personally pay a percentage of the judgment.
The bill, if introduced, passed and signed, would end the defense of qualified immunity for police officers. The defense first was developed by the U.S. Supreme Court and later clarified in a 1982 decision that said qualified immunity applies if the government official acted in good faith.

Day Drinking With KDJ: Jenna Ellis Cocktail Edition

This afternoon’s cocktail is called Jenna Ellis. It’s sweet but will knock you out. Especially if your name is Liz Cheney:
Ketel One Mint & Cucumber vodka
Diet tonic
lime wedge (squeeze the lime into the drink)
I can’t be the only one who wants to see the Ellis-Cheney bout. Reading Ellis’ tweet challenging Cheney to a debate about voter fraud brought me back to jr. high school, when uncool but cute girl “Monica” challenged “Kathy” the obnoxious jock girl from a large, obnoxious jock family to a schoolyard duel. Kathy was shooting her mouth off about how stupid Monica was, struggling to be popular with her Sears jeans, (not Jordache), braces, and “girly Trapper Keeper.” Kathy may have been a volleyball/basketball star but throwing dukes wasn’t her calling. Monica boxed her like a Little Caesar’s pizza.

Columbus cop Nicholas Reardon fatally shot Bryant four times on April 20
Body-cam video showed Bryant wielding a knife and charging at a woman
Shortly after the shooting James posted a tweet that included Reardon's photo
He captioned the image of the Ohio officer with the words: 'YOU'RE NEXT'
James later deleted his tweet, saying it was being used to 'create hate'

Trump circumvents Twitter, Facebook bans, launches own communications platform

The space allows Trump to post comments, images, and videos.
"In a time of silence and lies ... ," a video Trump posted to the platform Tuesday night says, followed by news reports describing his suspension from Twitter, "a beacon of freedom arises. A place to speak freely and safely. Straight from the desk of Donald J. Trump."
The technology appears to be powered by Campaign Nucleus —  the "digital ecosystem made for efficiently managing political campaigns and organizations," created by his former campaign manager, Brad Parscale.
The space allows Trump to post, and allows followers to share the former president’s posts to Twitter and Facebook. However, the new platform does not have a feature to allow users to "reply" or engage with Trump’s posts.

Ma’Khia Bryant and assumptions we make about a Black girl with a knife: Eric Foster

By Eric Foster,
CLEVELAND -- Ma’Khia Bryant’s funeral was last Friday. You remember her, right? Probably not. On April 20, 16-year-old Ma’Khia was killed outside of her home by Columbus Police officer Nicholas Reardon. The killing occurred about 30 minutes before the verdict in the trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was announced.

Law enforcement workers are heroes and should be treated as such

Card image cap

How have we gotten to a place where law enforcement is not treated as the heroes they are?
After 9/11, first responders were universally beloved for the bravery and sacrifice made daily. On that day, emergency personnel ran in to the burning buildings to help others to safety. 412 ultimately gave their lives in the greatest rescue effort in United States history. Across the country, law enforcement was held up as the American heroes they deserved.
Twenty years later, police officers have not changed. What has changed is how social media and network news support citizens not having accurate information in situations when force was required. It has led to incorrect narratives not supported by facts.

Biden's Racist Presidency-Racism by any other name is still racism

Biden’s Racist Presidency-Racism by any other name is still racism
Posted on
President Joe Biden addressed the nation on April 20
th following the announcement of the jury’s guilty verdicts against former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin for murder and manslaughter in the killing of George Floyd. Instead of focusing on America’s virtues as a country based on the rule of law, Biden played the spurious “systemic racism” card. Instead of focusing on America’s progress in becoming a more just and inclusive society, Biden said that Floyd’s death had "ripped the blinders off for the whole world to see the systemic racism in the United States." He added that this “systemic racism” is a “stain on our nation’s soul.”
