Texas Democratic Representative Claims There Are Six 'Biological Sexes'

(AP Photo/Gerry Broome, File)
In case you haven’t lately counted sexes, a Texas Democrat’s reminding everyone of the tally…
Scientifically speaking, at least.
State Rep. James Talarico addressed the state’s Public Education Committee last week over legislation that would ban biological males from girls’ K-12 scholastic sports.
The former English teacher asked Republican Rep. Cole Hefner — sponsor of HB4042 — how many sexes there are.
As reported by The Washington Times, Cole responded with…”two.”
“The bill seems to think there are two,” James replied.
The representative — who received his M.A. in education policy from Harvard — dropped some science.

How Jeff VanderMeer Prevents Writer's Block - The New York Times

“I get superstitious,” says the author, whose latest novel is “Hummingbird Salamander”: “I once had a book sent to me that was disrupting my ability to write a novel because of a superficial similarity between the two. I took that book and dug a hole and buried it deep in the backyard.”
What books are on your night stand?
I chose the night stand for its stalwart qualities and it is currently holding up well under the eclectic weight of an advance copy of John Paul Brammer’s “¡Hola Papi!,” B. R. Yeager’s “Negative Space,” Bernard Rudofsky’s “The Prodigious Builders,” Eley Williams’s “The Liar’s Dictionary,” Rita Indiana’s “Tentacle,” Stephen Graham Jones’s “The Only Good Indians,” Julienne Ford’s “Paradigms and Fairy Tales,” Angelo Maria Ripellino’s “Magic Prague,” Vigdis Hjorth’s “Will and Testament” and Sayak Valencia’s “Gore Capitalism.” I’ll leave it to readers to guess which are for research and which for pleasure.

Winter's Tale movie review & film summary (2014)

Adapting a well-loved book for the screen is always a risky proposition. Elements that work on the page will not work visually and vice versa. Compromises must be made. You cannot please everyone. But the film version of "Winter's Tale" probably won't please anyone: neither fans of the book nor those who have never read it. It lacks visual splendor (except for one or two scenes). It lacks emotional depth. It lacks scope and magic. It is clear that there is some big battle going on between Good and Evil and that Will Smith is somehow involved, but none of it makes any sense. The philosophical underpinnings of the novel, its thoughts on the turning of the centuries (and the millennium), and how cultures and societies go through giant upheaval during such moments, visible, and invisible, is completely lost in the New Age-y dreck drenching the narrative. Not even Colin Farrell as the thief Peter Lake can save it, and he is doing his level best, with an urgent, heartfelt performance. Mark Helprin's 1983 novel is one of the most poetic of the late 20th century, and yet this film version has no poetry whatsoever.

Opinion | Devoted to Trump, Not to the Republican Party

To the Editor:
Joseph Conrad wrote, “The leaders of men are carried forward in the hands of their followers.” Never was this more true than with Donald Trump.
It should come as no surprise that he doesn’t intend to start a third party. Why should he when, by owning the allegiance of his millions of Republican followers, he owns a perfectly good party of his own?
Mr. Trump’s obsession with Republicans in Name Only is interesting, because it is not his enemies within the party who are RINOs, but rather his followers. Their only loyalty is to Mr. Trump himself, and their only concern is carrying him forward. They couldn’t care less about the Republican Party.
