Connecticut’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection has announced the Opening Days of turkey and small game hunting seasons. The firearms turkey season opens this Saturday, October 7, and continues through October 31st. The Pheasant and Small Game hunting seasons open at a ½-hour before sunrise on Saturday, October 21st. Firearms deer hunting season begins Wednesday, November 15th. All the details are online at https://portal.ct.gov/DEEP/Hunting.

It now appears that a cyberattack compromised Social Security numbers, financial information, and Eastern Connecticut Health Network patients’ medical records. The attack occurred last August according to an attorney representing Prospect Medical Holdings — ECHN’s parent company. Prospect mailed notification letters to people whose information may have been compromised. It affects more than 24,000 Connecticut residents

In an effort to help New Milford students who can’t afford school lunch, a fundraiser is being held. The free lunch program for students ended June 30. While breakfast remains free for all students, and students eligible for free and reduced-price lunch will continue to receive lunch at no cost, some are now suggesting the creation of a so-called “lunch fund” to help out students who still struggle to afford lunch. 34 percent of students in the district are reportedly eligible for free or reduced-price lunch.

The nights have quickly turned from hot and humid to chilly here in Connecticut with the arrival of fall, and now many folks are starting to think about turning on the heat. Many are also trying to delay it as long as possible, because the cost to heat your home this coming winter could hit historic levels. For renters, the choice is often left up to the landlord. Under Connecticut law, if the temperature drops below 65 degrees, they need to turn on the heat or they could face charges.

The Connecticut State Bond Commission will vote at its upcoming meeting to approve an allocation of $25 million that will be used to purchase new ballot-counting tabulators for use in elections and primaries statewide. The equipment will replace Connecticut’s existing voting machines, which are used at every polling place in the state to tabulate the choices that voters make on their paper ballots. Governor Lamont says it is necessary because the existing machines, which were first put into use in 2006, are beginning to show signs of aging.
