Steve ‘Coach’ McKean has been remembered as a legend of sport in Taranaki following his death on Monday after being diagnosed with cancer. He is survived by his wife, Rachel, and daughter Naomi. While best known nationally as a basketball coach, locally McKean reached thousands of young people either through his time teaching at Spotswood College or as regional director of the Taranaki Secondary Schools’ Sports Association (TSSSA), a position he held for 20 years. McKean started the TSSSA, former Sport Taranaki boss Howie Tamati, who worked with him for 26 years, said.
Basketball 3x3 tertiary national championships presented by Stuff National Sports Editor Fred Woodcock said Stuff is pleased to continue their partnership with Basketball New Zealand and additionally support University and Tertiary Sport New Zealand (UTSNZ) for this event. “Basketball is a hugely popular sport in New Zealand and Stuff is delighted to present the national tertiary championships, alongside our established media partnership with the NBL.” The two-day tournament will be made up of 16 teams (eight men’s and eight women’s) from eight universities. Play will run from 11am on Saturday through till 3pm on Sunday. The Tall Blacks’ Olympic dream for Tokyo 2021 is officially over after Basketball New Zealand were forced to make the brutal call to withdraw from the qualifying tournament in Serbia because of a crippling cost blowout. Basketball NZ chief executive Iain Potter told Stuff the decision announced on Friday to withdraw New Zealand men’s teams from the Olympic qualifying tournament in Belgrade (June 29-July 4) and the 3X3 OQT in Austria (May 26-30) had been one made reluctantly, but with absolute clarity by the board. Players’ representatives had been consulted throughout the process.
