Coach Ravi Shastri’s dressing room stories of grit and determination worked as a tonic for young Washington Sundar, who is ready for any challenge even if it means opening the batting for India in Test matches.
The 21-year-old Washington was a specialist top-order batsman during his India U-19 days but then honed his off-spin to such an extent that he is now an automatic choice in India’s T20 team.
One of the heroes of India’s epic triumph in Brisbane, which gave them the four-match Test series against Australia, Washington spoke about the head coach’s influence on him.

NEW DELHI: The Indian team management is likely to prefer Shardul Thakur over left-arm pace sensation Thangarasu Natarajan in the third Test against Australia in place of injured Umesh Yadav.
According to sources, senior pacer Yadav, who had earlier missed the third Test due to a calf muscle tear, is heading home for rehabilitation after being ruled out of the fourth and final Test in Brisbane as well.
The third Test begins in Sydney from January 7.
"While people are excited about the brilliant progress shown by T Natarajan, we mustn't forget he has played only one first class match for Tamil Nadu. And Shardul has been a seasoned domestic red ball pacer for Mumbai," a BCCI source privy to developments in Australia told PTI on Thursday.

Melbourne: India’s debutant pacer Mohammed Siraj on Monday said that the MCG track has slowed down considerably and to wipe off the Australian tail, they will have to hit one area consistently.
The Indian bowlers, despite Umesh Yadav’s injury early into the second innings, reduced the home team to 133 for six. The hosts have just a two-run lead with four wickets remaining in the second Test.
“The track on the first day was very helpful for bowling but it has become very slow today. Not much is happening and there wasn’t much swing on offer. The key is to remain patient and hit one area consistently,” Siraj said during the virtual media conference.
