As the LGBTQ community celebrates advances in civil rights during Pride Month, Jim Patterson recalls a footnote in LGBTQ history that, for him, was far more than that as the late Sen. Jesse Helms came after Patterson in his position as Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual Program Manager at the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 1994, a position that was clearly ahead of its time.
