Valley News - A Life: Robert (Bob) M. Thatcher

Bob Thatcher’s first two pitches to his eldest son, Michael, were fastballs for strikes. The Rivendell Academy baseball team was scrimmaging on a spring day in 2001 and the assistant coach was feeling feisty and demonstrating why he’d once been a...

10 Wild Animals That Trapped Terrified People

10 Wild Animals That Trapped Terrified People
Simply being in the presence of wild animals in their native habitats is unsettling. Their gaze is pitiless. Quick and powerful, they are often equipped with sharp teeth or fangs and strong, penetrating claws that can rip and shred human flesh. Some sport antlers capable of rending and battering. Many are massive, weighing hundreds of pounds; their weight alone could crush a person to death. Wild animals are also unpredictable.
When such predators trap someone, uneasiness quickly turns to terror. In a battle to the death, there is little chance for a human being against such adversaries as a cougar; a venomous snake; a bear; an alligator; a polar bear; an elk; or even a determined camel, especially when there is no escape, unless there is an unassailable refuge, help arrives in time, one has a weapon at hand, or innovation, coupled with desperation, saves the day.

Here are two interesting facts about tiger snakes. Firstly, they are one of the most venomous snakes in the Australian bush. Secondly, they can swim.
One big tiger snake, one small boat
Mr. Thatcher was about 11 km away from the shores of Lake Wellington when he discovered the reptilian stowaway peeking out from one of the corners of his little vessel. It was about a third of the boat's length, leaving Thatcher with very little room to avoid.

An Australian fisherman shocked to find he was sharing his boat with a potentially deadly tiger snake 11km from shore says the encounter "put the heart rate up quite considerably".
Gippsland fisherman Bob Thatcher was caught off guard when he discovered last Thursday he was sharing his tinny with a passenger "that I didn't really want".

'Certainly life-threatening': 80-year-old Australian survives 30-minute boat ride with tiger snake | Snakes

“I could see this strange object I didn’t recognise. It was about 30cm from my feet, flicking its tongue out,” Thatcher told Guardian Australia.
He said he uttered an expletive or two during his ordeal on Thursday but declined to repeat the phrase he used to describe the snake. “I didn’t like the bugger – that’s all I’ll say,” he said on Monday.
After realising that getting out of the boat wouldn’t help “because it would still have been in there”, Thatcher started to head back to shore. At one point, he threw a jumper at the snake, to stop it slithering across the boat.
