Ferris State University is partnering with BAMF Health, a world leader in molecular imaging and theranostics headquartered in Grand Rapids, to provide students with in-demand skills in a rapidly changing field and support the company’s trailblazing work.

BAMF, which stands for Bold Advanced Medical Future, started in 2018 and uses the most advanced AI-enabled technology to detect and treat cancer, Alzheimer’s Disease, heart disease, and more.

Leaders from BAMF Health and Ferris State on Friday signed an agreement pledging to explore collaboration in a variety of areas to grow and enhance Michigan’s workforce. The goal is to support the growing theranostics field in the state by providing in-demand skills for Ferris State students and continuing education opportunities for BAMF Health employees at all levels.

This collaboration has strong support from several Michigan state legislators including House Speaker Joe Tate. Speaker Tate, along with Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, are committed to growing Michigan’s knowledge economy through public-private partnerships such as this. Speaker Tate was on hand for the signing ceremony at Ferris State’s David L. Eisler Center.

The Ferris State – BAMF Health partnership includes creating certification programs for Quality Control/Assurance and Regulatory Affairs, and Nuclear Medicine Technologists. Areas of focus also include creating student experiences and research opportunities and looking at ways to improve patient experience and program thinking.

Ferris State President Bill Pink said there is already a strong connection between the two, as many Ferris State and Kendall College for Art and Design of Ferris State University alumni play key roles on the BAMF Health team.

“Ferris State, throughout its nearly 140-year history, has partnered with leaders in many fields to help our students gain valuable, in-demand skills and grow a talented workforce,” Ferris State President Bill Pink said. “We are especially proud to work with BAMF Health, an innovative organization that is committed to finding new ways to tackle some of society’s most pressing healthcare challenges. Our students will have unimaginable opportunities to be a part of impactful work, and we can help BAMF Health employees gain new skills to help them advance in their careers.”

BAMF Health is revolutionizing precision medicine and theranostics by leveraging the most advanced imaging technology to detect and treat cancer and other devastating diseases. The company is also a leading clinical trials site for testing new diagnostic tools and therapies developed by radiopharmaceutical companies around the world.

“BAMF Health has ushered in a new frontier of medicine and is pushing the limits of what’s possible,” said BAMF Health CEO Dr. Anthony Chang. “We need new talent with advanced skillsets to make precision medicine accessible and affordable for all. Strategic partnerships with academic centers like Ferris State help us to curate this next generation of talent who will do what we never thought possible.”

The company is planning to work with Ferris State’s College of Pharmacy and other programs to train current employees as well as work with Ferris State students looking to enter the field.

This partnership connects so many dots for our university’s numerous stakeholders,” Provost Bobby Fleischman said. “From our alumni working at BAMF Health, to our students and faculty who will work together at the company’s cutting-edge facility, this represents one of our strategic pillars—and, that is, innovation. Taken together with our applied learning approach to instruction, it distinguishes Ferris graduates from others as they graduate to the tech-focused workforce in West Michigan and throughout the state”.

Kasey Thompson, Ferris State’s special assistant to the president for innovation and entrepreneurship, said the collaboration with BAMF is a perfect example of how the university can work with partners in new ways, building a talented workforce here in Michigan.

“It’s exciting to think about the impactful work that will transpire through this collaboration,” said Dr. Kasey Thompson, an associate professor and special assistant to the president for innovation and entrepreneurship. “Bringing together the expertise of Ferris State faculty and the innovative team at BAMF will create opportunities that we are still imagining.”

Ferris State University is exploring the development of artificial intelligence and learning how it can be used in classrooms and beyond by creating two virtual students who will enroll and participate in lessons and activities through the evolving technology.

The virtual students, named Ann and Fry, will enroll as freshmen, starting classes during the Spring 2024 semester. They will be a part of hybrid classes, interact with classmates and complete assignments.

Faculty and staff will monitor the interactions with professors and classmates, then use what they have learned to apply to potential applications in education and other areas.

Molly Cooper, a Ferris State professor and scholar of information security, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence, said the virtual students’ experiences will help faculty members find new ways to make education more accessible, among other uses on campus and in the community.

“Ferris State is a leader in artificial intelligence education and can leverage its expertise to use the technology we teach to strengthen our ability to lead,” Cooper said. “The more we use artificial intelligence, we can see what it is capable of and how we can use it to do things more efficiently and effectively.”

Ferris State’s Artificial Intelligence program is one of just three AI undergraduate programs in the nation. It has close ties to industry and government partners, including the Department of Defense, National Security Agency, Department of Homeland Security, Amazon Web Services and many Michigan companies.

Artificial intelligence is the development of computer systems that are able to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence. That can include visual perception, as well as speech recognition, decision-making and translating. AI technology can process large amounts of data to recognize patterns and make decisions.

The field is growing rapidly, with roles in cloud computing, cybersecurity, data science and robotics, among other areas. The scope of artificial intelligence applications is accelerating and becoming critical for more industries, from healthcare and education to marketing and logistics.

The virtual student project involves a variety of Ferris State academic departments and is being directed by the Information Security and Intelligence Department.

Faculty members created backstories for Ann and Fry based on real student experiences, which will be used to help them complete tasks such as declaring a major.

“These virtual students, and the work we are doing around them, are another example of Ferris State showing leadership in technological fields,” Provost Bobby Fleischman said. “Our students have opportunities to learn from faculty members who are experts in their fields, gaining skills with real world applications that will lead to rewarding careers.”

Ferris State hosted its first AI Day earlier this month, a faculty collaboration from various programs and student organizations.

About 300 area high school students attended sessions at the university’s Center for Virtual Learning and participated in a series of interactive exhibits and workshops with Ferris State faculty and students focused on artificial intelligence technology, including a Deepfake Lab, an AI Social Engineering Lab, autonomous vehicle racing, working with Chat GPT, and AI’s use in space and satellite cybersecurity.

Ferris State University on Thursday dedicated it’s Center for Virtual Learning, a $32 million facility intended to prepare students for careers in fields that are rapidly evolving – and might not even exist yet.

This new facility is located on the Big Rapids campus but will help Ferris State connect with students around the state and around the world. It is intended to be the physical hub of the Ferris State learning metaverse, bringing students, educators, and technology together, virtually and physically, as a community pursuing innovation and excellence in their fields of study.

“The potential this building has for programming is amazing,” Ferris State President Bill Pink said before joining students, educators and partners in cutting the ceremonial ribbon. “It has the kind of technology that is not only relevant for today but is malleable for skills for tomorrow.”

The building, constructed with state and university resources, houses programs aimed at tapping state-of-the-art technology, and teaching others how to adapt rapidly evolving tech skills to their current work.

Programs include:

Information Security and Intelligence: Ferris State’s program is a national leader, accredited by the National Security Agency, U.S. Department of Defense and the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. The program has increased space for Artificial Intelligence and Project Management degrees.

Esports Arena: This is the first arena built purposely for esports, which is a rapidly growing area. Students will be competing, but also be gaining in-demand skills for the rapidly expanding field of game design.

School of Education: eLearning: The new facility will help Ferris State teach the next generations of educators to more effectively teach online. This is key as Ferris State creates Student Success Hubs to reach out to learners across the state.

School of Digital Media: New facilities and technology that prepare students for ways to convey information and stories in new and evolving ways, connecting with wider audiences.

Bobby Fleischman, Ferris State’s provost and vice president for Academic Affairs, said the programs within the Center for Virtual Learning are consistent with the university’s focusing on making a quality education accessible.

“At Ferris State, we are proud of our history and our mission -- with good reason,” he said. “We are inspired to do better and think more boldly every day. Years from now, when future generations look back, I’m convinced they will look at this day and this facility as a key moment in our university’s history.”

The building’s special features include a Faraday Room, a super-secure room allowing for forensic analysis and artificial intelligence work. Students will work on cyber security and ways to spot and thwart malware, making our computers and world safer.

The Esports Arena is the first arena built purposely for esports. Students will be competing, but also be gaining in-demand skills to design games.

Esports, short for electronic sports, is a form of competition using video games, with participants squaring off as individuals or teams. More than 240 colleges and universities are fielding esports teams with more than 5,000 student-athletes, according to the National Association of Collegiate Esports, a Kansas City based nonprofit.

The area includes special esports chairs, obtained through a partnership with Herman Miller. Jon Campbell, vice president of Herman Miller and vice president and general manager of HMG, Global Retail, said he was proud to partner with Ferris State and study how the chairs are used.

He said the company will use its history of furniture design to look at how to improve performance.

“How do we use this expertise in ergonomics and human-centered design to really make gamers more comfortable and prevent injuries as they play,” Campbell said. “You guys are creating opportunities for future gamers.”
