ISLAMABAD: Criminal proceedings would be carried out against five individuals, including Ahmer Bilal Soofi, named in the Broadsheet inquiry commission report, Fawad Chaudhry, the Minister for Science and Technology, told the media on Thursday, as he said action would also be taken against Tariq Fawad Malik who had “facilitated the whole contract with Broadsheet”.
During a post-cabinet meeting media briefing here, Chaudhry said Justice (retd) Azmat Saeed Shaikh-led Broadsheet inquiry commission had unearthed “original data” of the Swiss accounts case, and therefore, he indicated Swiss accounts case against former president Asif Ali Zardari could be reopened.

ISLAMABAD: The commission constituted to investigate the Broadsheet scandal Thursday released its findings, with a key takeaway being that all institutions except for NAB were found to have resisted cooperating with the investigation.
Headed by Justice (retired) Sheikh Azmat Saeed, the commission has also stated in its report that Broadsheet's records were missing from “nearly everywhere”, including the Pakistan mission in London.
Additionally, the report states that the chairman of the commission (Justice Saeed) did not think it necessary to record Tariq Fawad Malik and Broadsheet CEO Kaveh Moussavi’s statements.
According to the report, the asset recovery deal made with Broadsheet makes evident the government institutions’ failure to comprehend international laws.

LONDON: The UK High Court of Justice has permitted Broadsheet LLC to serve freezing orders inside Pakistan on National Accountability Bureau (NAB) headquarters and Attorney General of Pakistan’s office in the Islamabad after bureau's London lawyers failed to respond to court orders over several weeks.
Broadsheet LLC had further approached the High Court of Justice – after securing a freezing order for nearly £1 million at the United Bank Limited London branch – pleading that NAB’s lawyers at the Allen & Ovary were not responding to their correspondence and the latest court orders which implies the Allen & Overy had gone off the record, and were no more instructed by NAB which also meant that the Pak government doesn’t currently have a legal representation in the ongoing litigation brought by Broadsheet LLC’s Kaveh Moussavi.

The Commission also seeks a ‘fact-based’ prosecution of Asif Ali Zardari in the SGS-Cotecna and ARY cases at the appeal stage.
Informed sources say that the Commission was dismayed over how these cases were decided by the Accountability Court in favour of Zardari. It was because of the ‘missing’ record, which the Commission insists is not missing. Therefore, this point must be pressed in the appeal stage of the case by NAB to get the trial court verdict reversed.

LONDON: The United National Bank (UBL) London branch has frozen around £1 million (Rs217 million) held in Pakistan’s account in compliance with an order, issued three weeks ago by the London High Court in favour of the Broadsheet LLC.
The UBL informed the Broadsheet LLC and the London High Court in writing that Pakistan government’s account, operated by Pakistan High Commission London, with around £1 million in it had been frozen until the next orders of the London High Court.
On Feb 15, 2021, the London High Court froze funds that Pakistan High Commission held with United National Bank in London up to the value of $1,222,037.90 plus costs to be determined by the court at a hearing in June.

Justice (retd) Sheikh Azmat Saeed, the head of an inquiry commission to investigate the Broadsheet issue, has informed the government that he did not desire any salary or perks for his work as the commission head.
The matter of the salary for the former Supreme Court judge is part of the agenda of the federal cabinet meeting, which will be chaired by Prime Minister Imran Khan on Tuesday (today). The government proposes pay and perks of Justice (retd) Azmat equal to that of a Supreme Court judge.
