we're going to turn to the top story, of course, this morning. that squeaker out in iowa where rick santorum and mitt romney are basically tied in the caucuses. >> is and what a roller coaster for the candidates. abc's karen traverse is live in des moines to help us figure out what's next. karen, what do you think was the biggest surprise of last night's caucuses? >> reporter: paula, i know we have been talking over the last couple of days that rick santorum was surging and might pull out a win. now when you look and see how close this was, the fact that he is there and possibly on the verge of winning the iowa caucuses is still a very stunning result here. just a couple weeks ago, he was in sixth and seventh place in some of the polls in iowa. he has skyrocketed to first place. he did that mostly on the support of evangelicals and conservatives. 83% of calk-goers tonight identify themselves as conservative. that was a very good sign for rick santorum. and certainly hearing him tonight, you heard him say "game on," they are very pleased with these results.
and tea party vote. her path is the same path it was when i started running her campaign back in june. she has to win iowa. she won the straw poll. she has to win the caucus. if he wins the calk urks she's ghak the game. all the focus has to be on raising money, doing well in the debates, which i think she can do and getting back to iowa and winning that caucus, which is very important come next december, january, twhaefr may be. >> so if it's all about iowa, that means for her it's all about rick perry. ignore mitt romney at this point. go after rick perry? >> he's the one that took her votes away. that's her base. romney has a certain base, somewhere in the neighborhood of 25% to 30% of the vote. she probably is not going to get that. she's got to go after that same vote that perry now temporarily is holding. >> you know, as you've been looking when you were in this campaign, how much, how concerned, for instance, were you that michele bachmann was never going to be viewed as the most electable conservative going forward? how important do you think
24, perry at 17 before he had announced. ron paul at 14. he's got a lot of word of mouth and grassroots support and internet support. michele bachmann at 13, newt gingrich at 7, herman cain at 4, among those candidates. gingrich has not been a factor. he had a good debate performance, i think, but he hasn't the money to take part in the straw poll. pawlenty has to do well to have the money to keep going. high school bachmann, how would you rate her performance? she had a lot of people in her tent. >> i think so. i think the poll understates where she is in this race. i think she's in the big three, in the big four. no question about it. and i think she's going to compete strongly here. yeah, the -- the thing about that poll is that -- i haven't seen ron paul running that well in any other national polls. and he tends to do well in straw polls but not so well in actual primary or calk votes. i'm skeptical about that. i think bachmann's a bigger player than the poll suggests. >> was it smart of huntsman and
it is even better, first choice and second choice in that poll, she is the first or second choice of 40% of the would-be iowa republican calk yaus goers compared to 33% for romney. in many ways she is out front there. she is definitely setting herself up as the main romney alternative. at least in the first caucuses in the nation. she is burying people like your good friend, tim pawlenty. >> thank you for noticing. i appreciate that. now yb dana knows how amused i am by tim pawlenty's campaign. the poor guy came in at like 6%. what a disaster. he says oh, know, huckabee was doing worse at this time. please spare me. please spare me. >> michelle, combining dana's point and your point, we are looking for not we, but conservative voters, are looking for the ub romney to set up social con sever tifs,ç tea
