into court today. jared loughner pleaded not guilty to federal charges that he tried to assassinate congresswoman giffords and two of her aides and while loughner was in court in arizona, giffords continued her long and hard road back in houston. tonight bob woodruff has the latest from the hospital. >> reporter: silence today at memorial hermann hospital in houston in wake of the announcement this weekend that congresswoman giffords had suffered her first setback. fluid on the brain. the accumulation of fluids in the brain occurs when a bullet penetrates the skull making the brain bleed or swell. to remove the excess brain fluid doctors have likely inserted a drain into a hole in her skull. >> pressure built up perhaps too quickly for the brain to accommodate, which could cause what we call herniation, and that could mean a very rapid demise. >> reporter: it could be a couple of weeks before doctors determine if this is a temporary accumulation of fluid or if it is more serious, requiring a permanent shunt to drain fluid. this is not uncommon for someone suffering this kind of wound from a gunshot or explosion on

congresswoman gaby giffords, just over two weeks since she was wounded in that shooting rampage in houston. nbc's janet shamlian in houston for us tonight. good evening. >> reporter: hi, lester. a small setback for gabrielle giffords tonight. she may not make it out of intensive care this week. doctors say she has a buildup of fluid on her brain, and while that's not unexpected, it does need to be watched. gaby giffords will remain in the trauma unit of the houston hospital longer than planned, but her rehabilitation hasn't been affected. her husband, astronaut mark kelly, messaging on twitter today, "gabrielle starts her second day of rehab in 20 minutes at memorial hermann. no weekends off for here." for now, a buildup of fluid in her brain is keeping giffords in the hospital's intensive care unit. doctors say the buildup has eased some over the weekend, a good sign. >> there's a little fluid
