The 'pet projects' that make up lawmakers are identifying for taxpayer funds

Lawmakers are putting in for police body cams, road repairs, community upgrades – and requests for funds ranging from a yoga program in New Jersey and a science center in Florida, now that a prohibition on 'earmark' requests has ended.
House Republicans ended earmarks in 2011 following a series of scandals, but voted to bring them back in March, and the House majority voted to reinstate them.
Under new reforms meant to stem abuses, the House Appropriations Committee publicly lists members' individual requests. More than 300 lawmakers have submitted proposals – although some critics of the practice have held back.
Congressional earmarks are back now that the whole House and the House GOP Conference pushed through changes. Lawmaker requests are now posted publicly on the Appropriations Committee web site

Idaho Rep. Mike Simpson: Saving Salmon Isn't Going To Be Easy

1:21
It’s no easy fix — from water for agriculture to hydroelectric power to shipping, the dams support a network of diverse industries. But Simpson said in a video released over the weekend, dam removal is the only way to try to save these salmon from extinction.
“In the end, we realized there is no viable path that can allow us to keep the dams in place,” he said.
Over the last three years, he and his team held 300 meetings with stakeholders, including tribes, agriculture and power representatives, and lawmakers.
But he’s still getting pushback. Among his opponents is fellow Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Washington). In a statement, she called the proposal a “drastic, fiscally irresponsible leap to take.”

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has approved disaster relief requests for nine eastern Washington counties and two Native tribes impacted by summer wildfires.
That includes aid for the Whitman County towns of Malden and Pine City, which burned during a Labor Day wildfire that was fanned by high winds.

Bipartisan group in Congress calls for further COVID-19 aid for seafood processors

A bipartisan group of U.S. senators and representatives have signed onto a letter calling for more aid for seafood processors and processing vessels.
The letter, signed by over a dozen members of Congress, calls for U.S. Department of Agriculture Acting Secretary Kevin Shea to implement a program offering grants and forgivable loans to support seafood processing facilities and processing vessels. The loans would help processors and vessel operators implement COVID-19 response measures.
“Seafood processors around the nation are conducting regular testing to ensure their workforce in coastal communities remains COVID-free, providing quarantine housing for employees to complete the recommended 14-day isolation period, chartering secure transportation for employees traveling to remote processing facilities, and marshalling a range of other resources to ensure and enforce safe working conditions,” the letter states. “These protocols are expected to cost hundreds of millions of dollars through next year, much of which cannot be covered by other Federal assistance programs.”

FEMA Approves Wildfire Aid For Eastern Washington Counties

Thursday President Joe Biden approved federal aid for victims of wildfires in Washington.
Today’s news means that communities affected by wildfires can now apply for federal aid. Previous requests for assistance had been ignored by the Trump Administration.
Scott Hokonson, a Malden town council member and the head of the Pine Creek rebuilding effort, said the approval comes as a relief for many Malden and Pine City who have spent the last five months in limbo.
