PRRD as senator can sustain fight vs. corruption, drugs: Belgica

CHIEF ENDORSER. President Rodrigo Duterte (left) raises the hand of former Presidential Anti-Corruption Commission Chair and Senate aspirant Greco Belgica during the filing of certificates of candidacyat Sofitel Philippine Plaza in Pasay City on Oct. 8, 2021. Belgica is hoping the President will join the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan senatorial slate so he can sustain the fight against corruption and illegal drugs. (King Rodriguez/Presidential photo) MANILA - Former Presidential Anti-Corruption Commission (PACC) chairperson Greco Belgica on Friday added his support to the ruling party's call for President Rodrigo Duterte to run for senator in 2022, saying it will sustain the fear in the hearts of corrupt government officials. Belgica said there is a need to sustain the gains of the Duterte administration, particularly against graft and corruption and illegal drugs, and deter criminals from going back to their old ways. "That is a welcome idea. I think all options are open right now. We wanted the president to run for vice president. We want him to run for senator. We just want him to be with us so that he could continue the reforms that he has started now in his term," Belgica, himself a senatorial candidate, said in a media forum. "Corrupt government officials will stop corruption because they are afraid to be exposed, to be caught by the President, by the PACC, and be exposed by the media with cases filed against them regardless of who they are," he added. He noted that because of the government's campaign against corruption, revenues increased. "You can ask (Bureau of) Customs about it. They've been consistently hitting their revenue targets. BIR (Bureau of Internal Revenue) has been increasing its revenue collection," he said. Duterte withdrew his plan to seek the second-highest post and opted to retire from politics once he steps down from office in June 2022, an announcement he made on October 2 when he accompanied former aide and Senator Christopher "Bong" Go in filing his certificate of candidacy (COC) for Vice President. Despite the planned retirement, the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) is urging the President to join the senatorial race instead. In previous interviews, Go said Duterte is still weighing a number of factors, including the senatorial slate of the PDP-Laban. He added PDP-Laban officials would meet before November 15, the deadline to substitute candidates, and finalize the roster. Aside from Belgica, the other PDP-Laban senatorial aspirants who have filed their COC are House Deputy Speaker Rodante Marcoleta, Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Salvador Panelo, former Cabinet Secretaries John Castriciones (Agrarian Reform), Gregorio Honasan (Information and Communications Technology), and Mark Villar (Public Works and Highways), actor Robin Padilla, and broadcaster Rey Langit. PNP launches Malasakit Center for cops, dependents

Guillermo Eleazar (3rd from right) and Senator Christopher "Bong" Go (2nd from left) do a "finger heart" gesture during the launch of the PNP Malasakit Center in Camp Crame on Monday (Oct. 25, 2021). The Malasakit Center will provide accessible frontline services and assistance to members of the police force and their dependents. (Photo courtesy of PNP) MANILA - The Philippine National Police (PNP) launched on Monday a Malasakit Center inside its national headquarters in Camp Crame that offers accessible frontline services and assistance to members of the police force and their dependents. PNP chief Gen. Guillermo Eleazar, together with Senator Christopher Lawrence "Bong" Go, led the ceremonial launch of the hub as a one-stop-shop for uniformed and civilian personnel, their dependents, and other clients of the PNP General Hospital who are in need of financial and medical assistance from Department of Health (DOH), Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and other government agencies. In his speech, Eleazar thanked President Rodrigo Roa Duterte and Go for their unwavering support to the organization and for prioritizing the well-being of police officers and their dependents. "Ngayong araw ay malugod at pormal nating pinasinayaan ang pagbubukas ng Malasakit Center dito mismo sa loob ng Camp Crame partikular na sa ating PNP General Hospital upang mabilis na maihatid ang agarang serbisyo at angkop na pinansyal o medikal na tulong para sa ating mga kapulisan at myembro ng kanilang mga pamilya, katuwang ang iba pang sangay ng gobyerno gaya ng (Today, we formally inaugurate the opening of the Malasakit Center right here inside Camp Crame, specifically at our PNP General Hospital to quickly deliver immediate service and provide appropriate financial or medical assistance for our police officers and members of their families, cooperating with other government agencies such as) PhilHealth, Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office and DSWD," Eleazar said. In the same event, the Office of the President (OP) also turned over financial assistance worth PHP10 million to the PNP General Hospital. Go served as guest of honor and speaker at the ceremony where he was joined by Presidential Assistant for the Visayas, Secretary Michael Lloyd Dino, former Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Salvador Panelo and former PNP chief and now Undersecretary Debold Sinas of the OP. "Ako po ay handang magserbisyo hanggang sa abot ng aking makakaya, sapagkat ang bisyo ko po ay magserbisyo sa bayan. Kami po ni Pangulong Duterte ay palaging nakasuporta sa mga pangangailangan para sa kapakanan ng ating mga kapulisan (I am always ready to serve to the best of my ability because my vice is serving the people. President Duterte and I have always been supportive of efforts to address the needs and welfare of the police force)," Go said. In 2019, Go principally authored and sponsored the measure that became Republic Act 11463, also known as the Malasakit Centers Act, after being elected as a senator. The establishment of Malasakit Centers in various hospitals nationwide since 2019 under the Malasakit Center Act is one of the Duterte administration's efforts to improve people-centered service delivery which complements the implementation of the Republic Act 11223 also known as Universal Health Care Act. Go vowed to push for the passage of Senate Bill 2421 which seeks to provide a Covid-19 risk allowance in lieu of the special risk allowance and other financial compensation granted under the Bayanihan to Recover as One Act (Bayanihan 2). As the nation continues to confront the pandemic, Go also praised the government's efforts to accelerate the vaccination drive which has so far administered 54.8 million doses of vaccines, including 28.3 million first doses and 24.5 million second or single doses. He renewed his appeal to the people to get vaccinated to achieve population protection and to further reopen the economy. Go also distributed 15 bicycles, 15 tablets, and 20 pairs of shoes to medical front-liners who were present during the ceremony. (PNA) }

DOLE chief open to running as 'substitute bet'

Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III (PNA photo by Joey Razon) MANILA - Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Secretary Silvestre Bello III on Wednesday said he is not closing his doors to running in next year's polls, despite skipping the filing the certificate of candidacy (COC) period last week. "There is a possibility. It will depend on what will be good for our country. If the opportunity will come, probably I would consider it. But in the meantime, I'm taking care of this very big problem of our workers first. The number of job losses, so many," Bello said in a virtual forum. The labor chief said it was his brother, Silvestre Jr., who filed his candidacy for senator under the ruling party Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) on October 8, the last day of the filing period. "That's my brother. I can't stop him," he said. The DOLE chief added that he was quite surprised when he learned that his brother filed his COC. "It was not mentioned to me. I haven't talked to my brother for a long time because he's been a little sad since my sister-in-law died, his wife. He recluses a bit," Bello said. Bello was earlier named as among the administration's senatorial candidates in next year's polls. The PDP-Laban's senatorial candidates who filed their COC on October 8 include House Deputy Speaker Rodante Marcoleta, Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Salvador Panelo, Presidential Anti-Corruption Commission chair Greco Belgica, former secretaries John Castriciones (Agrarian Reform), Gregorio Honasan (Information and Communications Technology), actor Robin Padilla, and broadcaster Rey Langit. Another administration senatorial candidate, former Public Works and Highways Secretary Mark Villar, filed his COC on October 6. According to the Commission on Elections, an aspirant/official candidate of a duly registered political party, who dies, withdraws, or is disqualified after the last day for the filing of COCs may be substituted by an aspirant/official candidate belonging to, and nominated by the same political party. It added that no substitute will be allowed for any independent candidate. The substitute of an aspirant who withdrew his candidacy can file his/her COC until November 15, the deadline set by the poll body. (PNA) }

Pinol says PRRD endorsed him as PDP-Laban guest candidate

SENATOR. Former Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel "Manny" says on Tuesday (Oct. 12, 2021) that President Rodrigo Duterte has endorsed his candidacy. Photo shows Pinol filing his certificate of candidacy for senator at the Sofitel Harbor Garden Tent in Pasay City on Friday, the last day of the filing period. (PNA photo by Joey O. Razon) DAVAO CITY - Former Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) Secretary Emmanuel Pinol on Wednesday said President Rodrigo Roa Duterte has endorsed him as a guest candidate for senator of the ruling Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) for the May 2022 elections. In a statement, Pinol said the President's endorsement came only during the past three days since he filed his certificate of candidacy on October 8 under the Nationalist People's Coalition (NPC). Duterte's endorsement was announced on Monday (Oct. 11) following the President's meeting with religious leader Apollo Quiboloy in this city. Pinol is the second guest candidate of the PDP-Laban slate. The other is former Public Works Secretary Mark Villar of the Nacionalista Party. Pinol has resigned from his post on October 5 to run as a senator next year. He thanked President Duterte "for the opportunity to serve the country." "We've had differences in the Cabinet over policies, but we have remained friends," Pinol said. He rejoined his old party, NPC, under standard-bearers Senator Panfilo Lacson and Senate President Tito Sotto when he was snubbed by other slates. Pinol thanked the President for his endorsement, saying his friendship with the Chief Executive has never changed. "Although I questioned the economic policies of his economic managers, especially on Rice Tarrification Law, he respected my position and we remained friends," he said. "I may have lost the battle in the Cabinet, but having been vindicated after rice prices increased, I plan to win the war at the Senate," Pinol added. PDP-Laban's senatorial slate includes Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Salvador Panelo, Agrarian Reform Secretary John Castriciones, PACC Chairman Greco Belgica, and Information and Communications Technology Secretary Gringo Honasan.
