CHICAGO (WLS) -- The ABC 7 I-Team is finding out what you need to know to get a tax credit for missing stimulus money.
Thousands of people who didn't get the first or second stimulus payments they were owed have been told to recoup their money at tax time. But it's not so easy.
Before you file a stimulus credit on your taxes, you need to make sure your missing payment has been officially traced.
"If you didn't get your economic impact payments or if you think you qualify for more than you received, don't worry, if you're eligible you can claim a recovery rebate credit when you file your 2020 tax returns this year," said Kemberly Washington, Forbes advisor and tax analyst.

Stimulus Check Update: $1,400 Payments May Affect Tax Returns, Here's Why

Stimulus Check Update: $1,400 Payments May Affect Tax Returns, Here’s Why

Many Americans are eagerly awaiting their third stimulus checks after President Biden signed his enormous $1.9 Trillion American Rescue Plan into law, but while $1,400 direct payments could arrive in many bank accounts as soon as this weekend, the relief payments could stall other money that Americans might be expecting from their federal income tax returns.
With the IRS processing not only tax returns but also the stimulus payments, the newest round could cause a further backlog when it comes to processing tax returns that have been filed, WDAF, a FOX affiliate station reports.

Child tax credit 2021: Some families to receive $300 stimulus payment each month per child

Congress has sent President Joe Biden the landmark $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief bill.
The enhanced portion of the credit will be available for single parents with annual incomes up to $75,000 and joint filers making up to $150,000 a year.
For example, in 2021, a family with two parents earning less than $150,000 and three children under the age of 6 could receive $10,800 on top of $1,400 in stimulus payments for each eligible adult and child, totaling $17,800.
"It'll help with household finances. Maybe even with medical costs, and just with entertainment. Everybody's been in cooped up the house," John Barbour, a Philadelphia resident, told 6abc.
In addition, the tax credit will be refundable, which means more low-income families can take advantage of it, even if their tax bill is $0. Until now, it has only been partially refundable -- leaving 23 million children unable to get the full credit because their families' incomes are too low.

At least $3,000 per child for families part of Democrat proposal for Biden's COVID-19 stimulus relief package

The Senate approved a budget resolution that's a key step toward fast-track passage of President Joe Biden's $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief plan without support from Republicans.
Spending by Ways and Means, one of Congress' most powerful committees, is expected to exceed $900 billion, nearly half of Biden's overall plan. The House Education and Labor Committee also previewed its plans on Monday, a roughly $350 billion package that includes $130 billion to help schools reopen safely, $40 billion for colleges battered by the pandemic and gradually raising the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour.
Top Democrats hope the House will approve the complete bill later this month and send a final House-Senate version to Biden for his signature before mid-March, when crucial emergency unemployment benefits will otherwise expire.
