Review: And If Our God Is For Us... - Chris Tomlin

Reviewed by Tony Cummings
With over eight number one radio singles, 16 Dove Awards, three Grammy nominations, two gold and a platinum albums to date, Tomlin is truly the dominant figure in modern worship. His latest album does not disappoint. In a time when many pop rock worship albums are sounding stereotypical and lacking creative flare 'And If Our God Is For Us' sounds fresh and dynamic. For the first time using two producers, Ed Cash, who of course Chris has used on his previous albums, and Dan Muckala, who gives Chris a snappier, more immediate pop sound without losing the wistful, worshipful feel of his old hits, no Tomlin follower will be disappointed. The standout songs here are "Our God", "I Lift My Hands", "Majesty Of Heaven", "No Chains On Me" and "The Name Of Jesus", some of which are bound to become church favourites around the world. From the powerful "Our God" (a version of which was on the 'Passion: Awakening' CD) to the catchy "No Chains On Me", a collaboration with Matt Redman and Jesse Reeves, this album manages to tick all the worship album boxes - namely songs that with their bold declaration of adoration of the Lord are destined for extensive congregational use but creatively produced to maximise radio play.

Review: Here's Mud In Your Eye - Krum & Theory Hazit

Reviewed by Steve Hayes
Two legends in hip-hop, Krum (formerly Playdough) and Theory Hazit team up to bring an album of extraordinary rhymes, rhythms, digging, wordplay, production and depth. This is an album that fuses samples ("Dem dry bones" through to a number of preachers such as TD Jakes and more), humour and some deep God-thoughts (such as the outstanding head bobbing "Live From The Alley Way"). At times this has a boom-bap, old skool, old soulful gospel sound to it ("Call The Kettle Black" intro and "Vaseline") while still retaining a contemporary feel ("living in the moment, just forgot to get a picture of it" from "Man vs Machine"). The ability to stitch together Biblical truths inside artistic flows and accessible yet leftfield ciphers ("Dead Fish Only Float Downstream") is what really sets this album apart - "Wake The Dead" is one example. Various reviews of this project describe it as "surprising" and "may take some time to get used to" and with "standouts and. difficult. to find a bad track". We conclude with "Why Eye", not a Geordie greeting but humbly how we know we're loved by God. An exceptional album from two exceptional rappers.

Review: Psalm - Terl Bryant | Cross Rhythms

Reviewed by Tony Cummings
With Joanne Hogg and Dave Bainbridge much in evidence on several tracks this debut for the session-seasoned drummer has much of the haunting, billowing Celtic mood of lona. But there are other delights as well. The gruff Ibo singing of Ben Okafor on "Christ Be In Me", the droning E-bow of Stuart Garrard on "The Lord Reigns". The Joanne Hogg led "Christ Be In Me" catches the ears, but throughout the feel is of sensitivity and worshipful restraint unusual for an album fronted by a drummer. A rich investigation of musical textures by seriously gifted musicians.

Review: Greatest Hits - Crystal Lewis

Reviewed by Tony Cummings
One of the great voices of CCM (and in Britain sadly neglected), Crystal has now been taken under Word's wing so this compilation of US Christian radio station "hits" is a useful retrospective of her years with brave independent Metro One. The problem with Crystal in the past has been the sheer diversity of her stylistic leanings jumping from anthemic MOR ballads to sassy R&B to sanctified dance and back seemingly at will. So punters might want to skip the occasional track in the 14 here not to their taste. My personal faves tend to be her funkier items though it has to be said that Crystal handles a hymn with majestic skill.

Review: The King Of All Of Me: New Worship From Maranatha! & Vineyard UK - Various

Reviewed by Tony Cummings
An interesting idea: take six tracks recorded in Britain by that worship collective known as Vineyard UK and space them out with six tracks cut in California under the Maranatha! banner. There is a notable difference in approaches, of course, with the Vineyard stuff being edgier and with more emphasis on full-on rock guitars while the Maranatha! tracks are mellower and with some deft acoustic guitar and cello work. Lots of excellent worship leaders including the Burn Band's Sam Lane, Trent's Nigel Briggs and the USA's Kate Miner while the standouts here, Sam Lane's "All From You" and Suzanne Courtney's "Forever You", sound good enough to connect with the world Church.
