It was the last open border between iraq and any other country, these people were largely the professional class and tended to be doctors, lawyers, novelists, filmmakers, engineers, people who were running from the chaos that followed the overthrow of Saddam Hussein and the civil war that began. I was there because i felt as if the kind of reporting i was reading tended to be battle reporting, if there was any kind of close detailed reporting it was on the experiences of soldiers, military maneuvers and that sort of thing and that is valid and valuable but there seem to be great missing piece which is the people who experienced war in the modern era tend to be civilians. Hi everyone i am carolyn greer, the producer of the brooklyn book festival with my colleague ms. Koch. We are in our 12th year this season and so delighted to have all of the fabulous authors participating. This year we had a very special circumstance with this particular program. Which is very important and very compelling on the subject of refugees. We decided to go in a different direction and do it from reporters. Telling from their insight and experiences in the field. And what happened is actually some reporters that we were having come got stuck on current assignment in the field. For instance patrick kane was going to come in his book is quite wonderful and he cannot be here today. And Oscar Martinez in san salvador is doing an investigative report right now.
