CCISD fifth graders teach new technological device

Students from Copperas Cove ISD got to be the teachers Monday when they taught teachers and other faculty members how to use a new technological device called Unruly Splats.

Top Dawgs on campus: Clements/Parsons wins national award


Four of the nearly 48 students of the Student 2 Student program at Clements/Parsons Elementary School cheered, blew horns, clanged bells and sprayed Silly String when they found out they had won a national award Wednesday afternoon.
The students won the Military Child Education Coalition’s annual Elementary Student 2 Student Team of the Year Award.
“Man, what an honor. Those kids were juiced, weren’t they?” Superintendent Joe Burns said, who was in attendance to witness their reaction to the announcement. “They were excited about that.”
One of the students that was part of the program and who was on hand to witness the announcement was soon-to-be fifth grader Ajiyah Ruffin.

Clements/Parsons Elementary honored for work with military students


Clements/Parsons Elementary School counselor Julie Armstrong served as a military spouse for 23 years and sent her oldest son to seven different schools in his first 12 years of public education. Constantly moving, military children experience being “the new kid” repeatedly throughout their elementary and secondary careers.
“I can only imagine how my son would have been thrilled to be welcomed and included on his first day at each of the schools he attended,” Armstrong said. “The main mission of the Student 2 Student Program at Clements/Parsons Elementary is to welcome all students, although it also benefits the militarily connected ones, to our campus.”

Cove elementary school selected as MCEC S2S finalist


COPPERAS COVE — The Military Child Education Coalition has announced the top three finalists for the organization’s annual Elementary Student 2 Student Team of the Year competition and Copperas Cove Independent School District’s Clements/Parsons Elementary School is on the list.
The S2S program brings military and civilian students together to welcome incoming classmates, create positive environments, support academic excellence and ease transitions for military-connected students around the world. Clements/Parsons Elementary School counselor Audrey Trahan said it is the students leading the program that make it effective.
“The success of the program is mainly because of the student buy-in,” Trahan said. “They are the ones that do most of the leg work and ensure that every new student on our campus feels welcomed and accepted.”

U.S. Congressman visits Cove third-grade class


COPPERAS COVE — Rep. Roger Williams, R-Austin, who represents the 25th District of Texas in Washington, D.C., paid a visit to a third-grade class in Copperas Cove Friday morning.
Students in teacher Sheila Grantham’s class at Clements/Parsons Elementary School wrote letters to Williams earlier in the year after reading a book about the Exxon Valdez oil spill.
Williams engaged in a Q&A session with the students Friday for about 30 minutes. All students were eager to ask questions of Williams about a variety of topics including how he became a congressman, leadership in Congress and oil spills and the environment.

Copperas Cove ISD announces its employees of the year


Copperas Cove High School’s Sandra Perry is the CCISD Secondary Teacher of the Year.
Perry, a registered nurse, has been teaching 22 years and is the head of the Career/Technology Education Department and also serves as the mentor coordinator for experienced teachers who are mentoring teachers new to the education field and the school district. In the classroom, Perry provides hands-on learning so that students receive real-world experience they will need to be successful in the nursing and/or pharmacy industry.
Clements/Parsons Elementary School bilingual kindergarten teacher Lessly Titas is the CCISD Elementary Teacher of the Year.
Titas has been teaching six years and serves as a mentor to new bilingual teachers. Having been a bilingual student herself, Titas understands the challenges her bilingual students face, ensuring that her students’ educational and emotional needs are met. Titas proactively gathers data and work samples and is always monitoring and adjusting her instruction to make sure all of her students are successful.
