HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. It takes a while for traffic to clear out on Long Island.
Connor McCarthy was ready when it did.
The graduate transfer waited to get a clear look at the cage, then fired in the game-winner with 1:38 left in overtime to nudge top-seeded North Carolina past Rutgers 12-11 in an NCAA quarterfinal at Shuart Stadium.
Lance Tillman scored four goals after entering the game with five on the season for the Tar Heels (13-2). North Carolina will face fourth-seeded Virginia (12-4) in the semifinals next Saturday in East Hartford, Conn., the teams’ third meeting of the season. ....

ALBANY  The UAlbany men’s lacrosse team has “a left-handed JD” among its goalie ranks this season.
That could bode very well for the team, if Liam Donnelly can duplicate some of the stellar play of former Great Dane JD Colarusso, a USILA and Inside Lacrosse All-American first-team selection in 2018.
The “left-handed JD” designation was bestowed upon Donnelly by Colarusso’s father, Joe, who coached Donnelly at the club level in Yorktown. So although Donnelly began his college career at Rutgers and spent the last two seasons at Utah, UAlbany head coach (and Yorktown native) Scott Marr is familiar with his game and expects him to be prominent in the goaltending mix this season. ....

Zach Triner played lacrosse at Siena in 2011 before heading home to Division II Assumption College to play football.
Looking back, Zach Triner’s life would be very different if it weren’t for Brian Brecht.
Brecht, currently at Rutgers, was the head coach at Siena from 2007-11, the last of which was Triner’s freshman season as a faceoff specialist with a full lacrosse career ahead of him.
Brecht left for Rutgers after that 2011 season, prompting Triner to reflect on his own future.
“When Coach Brecht left, it just gave me the opportunity to re-evaluate my life,” Triner told US Lacrosse Magazine. “If he was going to be intentional about his life, I was going to be intentional about mine.” ....

Connor and Colin Kirst Continuing Family Legacy at Rutgers
Mon Dec 14 2020 | Justin Lafleur | College
Former Rutgers goaltender Kyle Kirst passed away suddenly on June 16, 2015, at the age of 47. He was part of the Scarlet Knights 1990 NCAA tournament team.
For the entire Kirst family his wife, Michelle, and sons Connor, Colin, Cole, C.J. and Caden  it’s understandably still very raw.
“My brothers, mother and I are all very, very close,” said Colin Kirst, a goalie who spent four years at Lehigh before transferring to Rutgers to follow in his father s footsteps for the upcoming season. “Honestly, it’s tough to talk about. We wake up every day knowing and carrying it with us. Within these five years, we knew something good would come, but the scar would never heal.” ....
