Community Hospital celebrates grand reopening with city, hospital and community leaders • Long Beach Post News

During the event, Matthew Faulkner, executive director of the Community Hospital Long Beach Foundation, recounted the history of the facility starting in 1922 when the prominent Bixby, Bryant, Davis, Foresythe, Hastings, Tichenor and Walker families got on board with Fillmore Condit’s dream of opening a community hospital. Two years and $364,000 later, the facility opened and earned the moniker “The Miracle on Termino,” Faulkner said.
For decades the facility served the community—caring for the old, treating the sick and welcoming new life into the world. In attendance Thursday was retired Long Beach Firefighter Raymond Bays, who was born June 1, 1928, and is believed to be the oldest living person who was born at Community Hospital.

Ambulatory service returns to Community Hospital • Long Beach Post News

The hospital’s emergency department reopened on May 12 after being shuttered in summer 2018 but Los Angeles County Emergency Medical Services had not yet approved the facility to receive ambulances.
“Now that Community Hospital has been designated as a 911 receiving hospital, we’re ready to care for any patient who comes through our doors,” hospital CEO Virg Narbutas said in an email. “In these moments, seconds matter and having CHLB’s emergency department available to the residents of the Long Beach will save lives.”
The county notified operator Molina, Wu, Network of Community’s approval on May 19, according to hospital spokesperson Brandon Dowling. Monday was the first day the facility was allowed to receive patients via ambulance.

Community Hospital admits its first new patient in two and a half years • Long Beach Post News

The first patient was transferred from College Medical Center at about 4:20 p.m. Tuesday afternoon. Additional patients are expected to arrive in the coming days and weeks, though agreements with some facilities still need to be ironed out, officials said.
The nearly century-old Community Hospital is not accepting walk-in patients and its emergency department is not slated to open until March. For now, the facility will only accept non-coronavirus transfer patients from other medical facilities to free up space for COVID-19 patients.
Though a regional inspector gave the go-ahead for the facility to open Monday, the hospital did not accept patients immediately because transfers must be approved by hospitals, physicians and in some cases insurance companies, said John Molina, a partner with Community’s operator, Molina, Wu Network.

Doctors treat patients in hallways, ambulances as Long Beach hospitals begin to overflow • Long Beach Post News

Health officials and emergency workers painted a dire picture of the situation inside Long Beach hospitals today, as ambulances struggled to keep up with a crush of patients and the city activated a “mass fatality” plan to back up local morgues that are nearing capacity even as more critically ill patients flood local medical centers.

“The COVID crisis in Long Beach is not getting better; it’s getting worse,” Mayor Robert Garcia said in a news conference Wednesday. “We have to just recognize that we are living through the biggest challenge we have ever faced as a community and a city.”
